    @Slade @T.Guppy and anyone else
Ok let’s put our heads together to design a poll! Just to get a sense of what members are up to, to celebrate diversity and to get some interaction going.

Mods, should we move this discussion to pm rather? Would be a pity as others might also chip in with ideas, but if it derails the ToTM thread and annoys others too much, please let me know.

    Here goes

    1. How many planted tanks do you currently keep? For the purposes of this poll, if you have at least 1 live plant, it counts.
    - 1
    - 2
    - 3 to 5
    - 6 to 10
    - more than 10

    2. Which aquascaping style describes your planted tank best? Multiple answers possible if you keep different style tanks.
    - jungle
    - iwagumi
    - nature style (eg what George Farmer is most famous for)
    - biotope
    - dutch
    - paludarium
    - wabi-kusa
    - another specific aquascaping style not listed
    - I won’t call my planted tank ‘scaped’, I just wing it

    3. Are your tanks high-tech or low-tech?
    - high-tech
    - low-tech
    - some of my tanks are high-tech and some are low-tech

    4. How do you feel about keeping live aquatic plants?
    - they’re awesome!
    - neutral
    - such a hassle

    5. How many different plant species do you currently keep? If you have 2 types of crypts, it counts as 2.
    - 1 to 10
    - 11 to 50
    - 51 to 100
    - more than 100

    6. What is your prime focus / interest?
    - aquascaping
    - fishkeeping
    - both equally

What do you think? Too many questions? Anything else?

It sounds good to me! I think those 6 Qs cover the topic well and we can also add photos obviously (cause we can't have something like this without pictures lol!)

@A new day , you don't wait for anything, you probably go skydiving and THEN check your equipment :p The list already seems comprehensive, the biggest thing I want to ask is if it is possible to have multiple polls on the same thread and if not will it just be a case of answering "1- abc, 2- xyz, ..." either work but the first feels fancier :D

    1. spot on
      • 1.1- after no.1 it would be nice to know volume, example: I have 8 planted tanks, sounds epic! ... but its only 350 liters worth, less volume than an average 6 foot tank.
    2. that last one
    3. I don't know much in this area
    4. great
    5. I would never have thought about adding this
    6. simply put
    7. Tank pruning/trimming schedule?
      • small trims frequently
      • large trims now and then
      • when I see the need
      • I don't prune forests

    My 2c worth

LOL well we are kind of checking our equipment before going skydiving

Good point re format. Initially I thought the poll function would do the trick (and would be easier for members to fill in) but that would only give us aggregate results.

If we ask members to answer the questions by posting on the thread, it will also give them the opportunity to post tank pics like @T. Guppy said (and post links to tank journals if they have) and we’ll learn more about what individual members are up to and the different interpretations of styles. Which is probably more interactive and interesting than the aggregate? Think there are a lot of members who don’t normally enter comps / keep tank threads and hopefully we can get some of them to also participate.

@Hendre I like using Google docs generally, and it would give good analyses, but don’t know that I would’ve taken the time to fill it out on the forum??? What do others think?

Addition of 1.1 and 7 I like it.
No 3 we could clarify eg high-tech = CO2 injection, high light, high ferts, demanding plants

I agree with that, try to make it simpler and faster than having a whole tank thread but a little more fleshed out than having just an aggregate poll. It would be nice to see a wide variety, whether its a 9-5 job to care for OR even a slapdash setup, inspiration can be found in all and with the little "questionnaire" a person can see roughly the work that would go into that persons tank.

Also what's nice about how you've asked the questions is that anyone can participate, even the people who don't have a planned out aquascape, just a fish tank with some plants dotted around

Yes so that no one feels intimidated, and hopefully the experienced folk won't think it beneath them ;) we have a lot to learn from them. Kind of Meet the Planted Tank Members / What's your planted tank poison / What have you been up to ...

We need a good thread title...

"You Will Never Believe This Is Real Unless You Click Here To See It For Yourself!" - I dunno, that normally works for scammers :tt2::lol:

Seriously though "Meet the Planted Tank Members" works well. Short, sweet, understandable and to the point. Maybe the first post can be a little write up about how a planted tank can be beneficial (ie: nitrate consumer, place for fry to hide, etc) and that it can also be quite fun to scape and ascetically pleasing (even the slap dashes I have :D)

I like that one too. And also in that initial write up we should also just say that this isn't a competition and that everyone should participate.
Question, in this thread is plastic plants welcome too?

Yes cool, good to clarify that from the get go.
I reckon if there’s at least 1 live plant in the tank, it counts?

yeh I also think that there needs to be at least one live plant else it's just another "show your tank" thread, there is no intention to exclude anyone but in the same breath it has evolved into a planted theme and if the first question is "0 plants/plastic plants" the other questions all basically mean nothing.
