hey all I just got myself a new betta, when I saw him I just couldn't leave without him. I brought him home, got the temp's the same and put him in one of the large 5 way breeder trap. it's just temporary housing. the problem is he wont eat, he's hanging at the surface and he's breathhing is really slow, he was fine when I picked him. I need advice on what to do, add some salt, medication, water change? please help.

    regards
    BB

Betta boy... sometimes fish take a day or two to settle into their new tank before they start eating. I wouldn't stress about it right now. What I would encourage you to do is to get him out of that trap ASAP and into a proper tank.

Keeping Betta's locked up in those small traps is just cruel, (in my honest opinion), and he will be 10 times happier in an open tank.

When Bettas relocate the most of the time do not eat for a day or two.
They need to adjust to the new enviroment. They can go for 5 days without food so don't
worry to much. Leave the meds and just try to make him feel safe in his new home.

No they are pretty tough little guys. They sometimes stay in those litte jam bottles at the petstore for weeks right after being shipped from overseas.

Just make sure you acclimatise him properly.

He will probably get more stressed in a cramped space then being moved to a bigger space.

In my opinion... Betta Baracks should be made illegal!

I think you are thinking of those crazy dumb Behind side plastic things.

He means barracks as in a collection of small betta tanks. These would be big enough for a heater and filter. So round about 1ft.

Vis is right, a betta Baracks, other wise known as a Betta Drip System is multiple betta tanks of any size filtered off of one sump. They are amazing. I wouldn't dream of putting a betta in one of those "crazydumb behind side plastic things" lol.

Funny been keeping an eye on my mixed guppy - betta tank (it has 5 beta females) and spotted the one with a guppy fry in her mouth. So maybe it is time to move them out of the tank into a drip system.

What is the typical liter capacity for a single container for a beta in such a barracks?

Saw some nice 1.8 liter containers at the plastic shop today ... not sure they are suitable.

considering the water is always being filtered you could, in theory, have them in any thing. Ive seen systems using modified 2l coke bottles. when looking at plastic containers the shape is more important than the volume, its great having a 1L container but if its 20cm tall it wont work. consider your dimentions and swimming room first. im looking at around 5 to 7 litres depending on the shape of the container and the area and construction of my shelves, if I ever get my hands on them.

    PS
A drip system saves a person from having 20 1ft tanks with 20 heaters, 20 filters and 20 lights. I'll start a thread on it once I get everything going.
