Just a quick question here, is the heater absolutely necessary in summer for breeding betta's?

Hi @Ashleigh - I think maybe why nobody answered your question is that this is a bit of an old thread and the OP doesn't post much anymore. We have quite a few betta fans and breeders on TASA, @Charles @HennieRoux @Rooivlerkie (off the top of my head) will be able to help you. Why don't you introduce yourself in the new members section and tell us something about your plans :)

@Ashleigh the temp plays a big role in Bettas, so yes, unless your room can give @ least a constant 26deg C, I would keep the heater on right thru the year. Just drop your temp on the heater in winter so it maintains the desired temperature.

    Cheers

Hi there, followed your thread and it worked really well. I bought two males and two females a couple of months ago. Setup 4 tanks. The first pair spawned about a month ago and the second pairs eggs hatched Monday 15th. I've been feeding with liquifry and BBS. I'm in Randburg. Does anyone have a culture of MWS that I can start mine from, Marco in Pretoria has offered to help but I can't get there for a few days?

@sick -lid man, size is fine. Just lower the water level to 10cm. After you removed the male when the fry are free swimming, gradually raise the water level until the tank is filled up. I do me gradually! Like 1 litre of water per day after you siphoned the bottom clean and toped up the water to the same level prior to siphon.

Ok tanks @Charles, and will the heater size matter, have a spare 150w so deciding to use that, water levels at 14 cm is that fine or I should drop it

Hi @sick -lid man, heater size does not really matter but for a 2ft tank a 150w is fine at a temp of 27*C. 10cm water level is better, it's a shorter distances for the beta's to go fetch the eggs that drop to the bottom. After the fry are free swimming you gradually raise the water level as I previously posted.
