Cheap heaters vs expensive heaters

Got myself 2 sicce scuba heaters for my big display tank and it also gives you a 2 year guarantee on it. So gonna use the cheap heaters as backup heaters.

Does anyone know anything about this plastic protection they talk about against burns

 

I thought I'd post here instead of opening an entirely new thread. I was wondering how the power consumption of a Jager would compare to the cheap heaters? From what I understand is that the filament on the cheap heaters heat up quicker, therefore using less power. The argument I make then is that a Jager would possibly use less as it heats the water more efficiently leading to it being on less. Has anyone experimented with heaters in this respect or could share some insights?

 

You need x amount of energy to heat y volume of water to a certain heat, irrespective how it is delivered, i.e. via cheap or expensive heater

 

You can buy a jager that uses less wattage but can still heat up a big tank.

 

ive had problems with via aqua heaters, ive lost 3 or 4 in the last 6 months, temp set to 26. some of them get water inside and others just burst, they never leave the water, and are always fully submerged. when I do big water changes I plug the heaters out and wait about 10 - 15 mins before removing water.

so now I'm slowly moving over to dophin as I like the way they look and ive never had a problem with them.

 

As @Jwh stated, you need x amount of energy to heat y volume of water to a certain heat.
So whether you use a cheap or expensive heater it is the same when it comes to energy consumption.
Jaeger/Eheim heaters are usually longer than most heaters, so they have a greater area of heat transfer to the water and this is beneficial as you can use a less powerful heater for the same tank volume as some of the competition.
Energy consumption however will be pretty much the same.
Just imagine heating up a large volume of water, for example a pond. Would you rather have a 2m long heater rated at 3000W or a 20cm one rated at the same wattage?

Regarding Dophin heaters, I had one bursting its glass on me while I was looking at it. Won't get any of those anymore.
Also experienced Via Aqua heaters taking in water, struggling to get it out. One Via Aqua heater I had to take apart as it was not working anymore. Turned out the filament was ok but the thermostat did not switch on anymore. Once in pieces, no way to get it safely back together so it is heading for the bin with me having a spare glass.
I must have around 40-50 heaters, lots of them Eheim, never had an issue with them.
