got 3 hungry oscars, have been breeding guppies and have quite a few now but they'v kinda grown on me and dont like feeding them anymore to the big guys besides the fact that they work out to tit bit sized meals the crickets are more economical.they will however work ut perfect for my next piscivores :)

why don't you feed your oscars mosquito fish (Gambusia affinis). They look like guppies.

Unfortunately @Fry that species is blacklisted in this country, in other words you're not allowed to keep or trade them, even if you're using them as a food fish.

Here is a little trick with feeding crickets to your fish that gives you much more "bang for your buck" - You get a product called "Gut Load" From the reptile section of your LPS - feed this to the crickets at least 12 hours before you feed them to your fish - truely turns them into little packets of goodness...

@Khalid - Not a work today,so cant go grab one off the shelf and check - smells suspiciously of good quality fish flakes though...lol - will update tomorrow when im back at work...

Tried a little sample of it on feeding crickets to my Tarantulas... their growth rate has almost doubled since I started with it..

Hmm will try it,i usually feed them with fresh carrots a day or 2 before feeding cause what ever they feeding the crickets in the shop looks like orange biltong i dont know when those poor things last had a good meal, thats probably why theres usually more dead than alive in the container.

Carrots are like feeding them "bread and water" - crickets actualy require a good bit of protein in their diets.... Also cant stand humidity...better to put a tiny water dish(that they can climb out of) for them than spray misting their container... Keeping them well fed will also cut down on canabalism (the reason you find so much dead ones in the tubs)

i read that feeding them carrots is good for them and some vitamen in the carrots improves the colour of fish via the cricket, also read they get all their water through the food they eat.i've seen dog pellets in the container would this be the high protein you talking about?

Carrots good for vitamins and carotene - yes.. dog pellets o.k ish for protein... but thats like feeding Pick and Pay Flake food to your fish versus Ocean nutrition or Hikari... always believe in feeding my pets(and their food in this case..lol) the best I can get... try the "Gut load" - has worked a charm for me...
