Hey @pHish_man, I was just going through some old threads on filtration and realised that your description of your trickle filter was what gave me the idea to go with one for my discus tank. I'm very happy with it and am punting it to everyone, so wanted to say thanks

All good, glad this explanation could be of help. I first saw this method being used in Prof Dirk's fishroom a few years back and decided I will not attempt housing large groups of large discus with any form of filtration system other than this. My own batch of Malaysian imports have grown to a fantastic size without issues in this system so its been a massive learning curve for me. You just cannot get the same volume of filter media into a canister, hang on or any other type of filter.

And trickle filters are cheap.....a 25kg bag of quality ceramic rings will set you back just under a grand and to make up a tank/plastic housing for the media is cheap enough.
