Metro will not kill and remove ALL the flagellates. What it does is reduce the infestation and then hopefully the fish's own immune system will be able to keep them under control. But they will be there forever unfortunately and then pass these parasites onto their young, and so the cycle goes.

In terms of the fish building up immunity against them, nutrition, esp vitamin C, plays a vital role and Dirk has an outstanding thread on feeding discus. Whenever guys post problems with their discus 9 times out of 10 its due to flagellates and then if you check their diet its normally just a feeding of tetra bits and bloodworm. This is not an adequate ration.

But it boils down to the fact that with pf fishes you don't have this issue. And so don't need to worry about treating your fishes with a schedule 4 anti-biotic.

Hi Quinton, yes I believe it is metro, but that route is going to work out extremely expensive in your case. 1000litre tank @ 10mg/l ( as advised to you on another forum ) will be 20grams of metro for the full treatment.

Make friends with a local vet or pharmacist and then get a generic metro which will then work you out at under 50 bucks.

Wouldn't it be more efficient just to soak the feed in it?

I tried this once and it didn't really work.
Soaked some freeze dried black worm in Metro and fed it for a week or so.

The problem, is that one of the typical symptoms of flagellate problems is that the sick fish refuses to eat, eats and then spits out the food, or eats only tiny amounts.

It is far more reliable to treat the water.

Thanks for answering all our questions guys. Discus are becoming less mysterious to me:).

So how is it that there are German breeders who have pf discus? Were they treated to become pf? There must be a way to completely eradicate parasites from a fish?

That is exactly what these guys have done, and the results speak for themselves.

Ten days old and now need to start thinking about a gill-fluke treatment programme. I cant wait until my pf fishes are breeding, then I wont need to worry about all this medication cr*p!!

Anyway, for now these fry are growing extremely well.

Thanks guys, yes their progress has been good so far and their uniformity is great. So at 12 days now I will start mixing in a bit of high protein powder with their bbs feeding. It's interesting to note that when I add bbs the group move as a whole away from the parents and attack the bbs.

With the amount of work needed to get these youngsters to a decent size, there won't be any profit. :cheesy:

    For sure!!

Ive learnt with breeding fish: the best way to MAKE a LITTLE money, is to SPEND a LOT of money. But it is rewarding, isn't it.....

The best reward is seeing them grow to healthy pretty large adults.
