@Reedfish what immediately grabs me is the quality of the photos used there. I assume it covers all the orders and families, but only shows example species? Or does it cover taxa quite well?

    Yes, the quality is good.
Not an expert on this group.
So for eg under a certain genus of squid there are photos of say 10 species. Whether this covers all known species in this genus, I don't know.

But there are also some articles on various topics too.
For eg quite a bit of history and background on the Kraken ie Giant Squid.

Hmm... I asked since it is such a diverse group. I can imagine it'd be hard to cover all the species due to (a) space limitations and (b) inability to access good quality information and pictures on every species, especially rarer or deep-sea species.

But covering all the genera I can imagine is a bit more manageable.

Maybe a book for later consideration for my library.

My birthday is coming up, may try and negotiate it in :)

@Reedfish I've got my eye on a few things on those sites, especially since some titles you can only find there. But I did find some new titles, that I can find for a little cheaper on Amazon (and their third party dealers).

Waiting for the next paycheck, then might treat myself. Probably an Aqualog or two.

@Reedfish definitely keep us updated. The reviews I've read are good, but it'd be cool to hear it from someone this side, at least I can ask you more detailed questions on some aspects.

Until then, I'll leave that tab open and my mouse over the 'add to basket' button.

    Thanks for those links @Reedfish

I have ordered those two books
The Analogue one worked out to R279.00 and the other one R429.00 including shipping

Those books here (if you could find them) would probably be double the price

@MariaS you're not wrong about the overpricing of specialist books in South Africa. I spent ages looking for a (non-fish) book, never considering looking at overseas suppliers. The book this side, if available at all, was as much as R3000, and the cheapest (but with a massive waiting period) was about R700. I got the book from the US for R110, including the shipping cost.

I honestly don't know how these local stores expect to compete.

The sad part is that the prices of books have become so ridiculous that it puts people off buying good books written by experts and resort to everything they read on the internet which, we all know is not always accurate.

I find the opposite happens with books published in SA

I could get a lot of them on ABE or Amazon. But it works out to about half the price if I buy them when I am visiting my family. Only prob is then not to have weight issues when flying home

Being sharks and rays, i guess they would concentrate on marine but still looks great if you enjoy reading up on the subject..

Well I have had a good read through my copy of Sharks and Rays
Must say, that imo, it is well written.
Gives great info on how to keep the smaller Elasmobranchs. It also covers a few of the larger species but clearly states that these are only suitable for public aquaria
