as often as it gets dirty hehe, it depends on your biological load, I clean mine every 3 weeks but thats just to be on the safe side and in the 3 weeks it doesnt get all that dirty.

Just open the canister every 2 or 3 weeks and check how dirty it is and after a while you will get used to how often it needs cleaning.

Maybe someone here has a better way of doing it?

PS. if the flow rate decreases also a good indication that the filter is getting clogged.

These filters should come with little windows.
Used the flow rate as a indicator this weekend that why it got cleaned, and bio balls and extra sponge added.

 

I clean one chamber a month. Next month the next chamber and so on, so if you have three chambers, it's a three month cycle. That way there is always an established amount of bacteria present.

 

Ok, will try this and see how it goes, what can i use to collect the real fine particles in the tank.
