Hi, does anyone have any Lights or substrate that would work well in a low tech planted aquarium?
From the research I have done so have, I have gathered that I am looking at around 0.5W per l? Is this correct?
    Thanks guys!

What are the dimensions of the tank? It will help to see what lighting you would need. And filters, and some other stuff.

Sorry forgot to mention, not sure what the dimensions are but I know it's a 38l tank. It's one of those smaller boyu tanks.

    Hey,
I have a low tech 48l tank. I have small pebble type substrate and I am running 2 x 10w t5's and my plants grow really well. I dont always put both on all day though as it does get abit much. Just got to consider what plants you want though...

For lights, you can easily use cfl's. Two Philips Genie 14w cool daylight will do perfectly. Ellie's has a opple 15w cool daylight. Both available from builders warehouse. Or go to Spar and they have the eveready cool daylight as well - if you want something really bright, then buy the 20w but this will be overkill and will cause issues.

I am growing an HC carpet with the 15w opple.

What you need to look our for is "cool daylight". This runs somewhere between 6000k and 6500k, perfect for a planted tank.

thanks @shan. Seems like the Philips Geniee 14W cool daylight is a good option.

@shan - Excuse the ignorance, but what ballast do I use for the Philips Genie bulbs?
