Filter sponge

Hi Guido and Darryn,

I have now checked my sponges and my sheets are 50 x 50 cm, PPI 30, of two thicknesses, either 3 cm or 5 cm. I have two 3 cm sheets and one 5 cm sheet. The price is R100 for a 3 cm sheet and R160 for a 5 cm sheet. Let me know if you are interested. The colour is blue which is exactly as is shown in the DATZ, Guido, and is used for the construction of the Hamburger Mattenfilter.

Hi Gert,

Darryn purchased the one 5 cm sheet that I had and I have some more sheets that are thinner. I can check what I have in stock if you are interested.

Perhaps Darryn can give us some feedback on what his experiences have been with this foam.

I use this foam as a course filter prefilter in all of my filters in which I have fast flow rates and there it works very well.

Iv seen a petshop here in durban use this kind of filteration in there tanks, always wonderd why the sponge was so big and if it was safe. But it looks a bit unsightly.

 

its big to provide a big surface area for beneficial bacteria to thrive.. it looks ok if u use some plants to cover it..

 

When you get a new piece of this sponge it is bright blue and this does look a bit unsightly. However the blue colour changes to dark brown within weeks which then looks much nicer. What you can also do is to stick pieces of Anubias into the sponge, and these will then produce roots which grow into the sponge and the plants will grow very nicely. What I am therefore saying is you can create an Anubias wall combined with a filter which then actually serves two purposes and does look very nice.

"Anubias wall combined" hmmm stunning idea - thanks prof .. a question on this. How would I then clean the sponge - just leave the plants in it and give a slight rinse. BTW I might need more sponge from you - I already use all of it on filters and HOB pre-filters works great. I thought is would be a dog to cut - I just used a very sharp long broad blade knife no issues.

This sponge has these very large pores as you will have seen. As a result it does not get so clogged when it gets dirty, so as you have suggested, all you need to do is to let running water flow through it to clean it.

And yes, it is very easy to cut. Don't cut deep holes into it though for the Anubias.

Yeah, I want to make a HMF, not sure of the best PPI for that? My tank is 32cm high and 32cm wide and I want to put it in the one end. Do you have any leftovers?

yeap - got some 30 ppi, but that is way to dense for an HMF,

for a 32x32 I would think a 20 ppi is what you are looking for at 5 cm thickness

check with sondor in the morning ... will be nice to see what the new prices are.
