    Howzit people

    Today I went and bought a female Demasoni, after I acclimated it and got ready to add the fish to the tank i noticed some red discharge coming from the anus, did not think much of it. After about two hours and after doing my midweek water change I fed the tank as per normal routine. Fish did not come out for a feed and so i went digging between the rocks for it. Found the fish dead and still some red discharge and now believing it might have been blood.

    Has anybody encountered something like this before?

    Regards

    Was she the only fish in the bag? I've had this happen to a fish in my tank before but it was after it was rammed into by another fish. Coincidentally it was also 2 mbuna but was a kenyi that rammed a socolofi in a holding tank as I was briefly holding all my fish in different tanks while I was changing my substrate. They were the only fish in the tank and I watched it happen from across the room

    Yes she was the only one in the bag
    The only thing that makes sense to me atm is when i put her into the tank the 2 elongatus's swam all around the bag for about 10minutes. Might have rammed her but still not making sense as i always seal the bag again once i added a little bit of water

    It's a possibility because when the bag goes into the water it becomes thinner the second you open it and if she was attacked had literally nowhere to turn to. It's the most likely, however, if she was active in the store and looking healthy in the bag then thats likely your cause. When buying Malawi's I tend to base their health on how much effort the store needed to put in to catch them because I know for a fact a healthy one is very hard to catch especially when you're trying to get one out of 30 or so

    What I do when I acclimate now is I crush flakes and feed my fish as the bag goes in and keep the lights off. The amount of time they take to eat and then sift the sand takes a good 15min and by then I've already added atleast 50% of the bag of tank water using a cup. By then I put the new fish in and watch for interaction for the next 15min or so. I also don't add one fish at a time, always 3 to 5 so they don't get picked on easily as it's spread out. If you have a male demasoni I'm more convinced that he's the culprit as they usually are only tolerant of their own kind when they're in numbers higher than 10, every time I kept them in less numbers one picks on the rest until he's the last one standing, gender doesn't matter. I've kept a breeding colony though of 3f 1m in their own tank without issue though but breeding behaviour was bleak because the females would chase the female that was spawning away. And it just wouldn't happen. I didn't have the tank space to separate them so I just gave up and eventually broke that tank down and added them to my main tank until the above happened eventually by another male that was already in the main tank

    @Reedfish

    I did not see anything happen but i believe its the Elongatus male that was just a tadbit too excited.

    @Shabir
    At this stage i am giving up on Demasoni as a whole. Went and picked up another 3 of them and they became the 1 Frontosas favourate snack on sunday.

    Ouch that's a very expensive meal. Also why I won't mix fronts with mbuna. Do share pictures of your tank though you have peaked my interest much

    Actually only the N. Brichardi's and 1 Demasoni move between the structures for now. The rest could not care less for decorations

    But thank you very much. The tank has good days and bad days as i rethink the scape
