Does any one know a formula where as I could workout the carrying power of a steel structure. or the other way round if i want to a stand that can support tank x what thickness steel do i need.

Im looking to build a stand that could support 3 1.2m tanks on top of one another... any thoughts?

Standard Safety iis that an item cannot be higher than 3 times its base.
I think even with tanks that will still be a problem, unless its all being bolted to a wall.

I have stands made with 25x25mm Square tubing, and they can support upto three 1.2m tanks.

Each shelf support has a second 25x25mm tubing directly underneath it, and is spot welded along its length to reduce/stop bending.

Each shelf is 50cm wide and each tank is a standard 45cm wide by 45cm high. There is only maybe 20cm to work on the tanks on each shelf. One shelf is at floor level and so syphoning can be an issue!

Just some stuff for you to consider!

    Cheers
    G!

To determine the size and thickness of the steel profile that you want to use in the stand you will have to do some calculations based on the span and the weight that you want to support, or get someone to do them for you. That will be the most economical way to size the profiles.

What are the dimensions of the tanks? Will give it a shot, have to go and do some digging, but I might be able to help you.

    Hey there.

Have you got a stand built yet?
I might be able to help if you give me tank dimensions, how high off the ground you want the first tank, what space you need between the tanks and how much extra weight you're going to put in the tanks (amount of rock sand etc).

I can do a design check in my structural analysis software.

Gilbertr14 has a point about it being top heavy but I have seen it being done.

Had a stand like this for 1.2's and used 50mm angle iron that what 5 mm thick. Also ran a support down the centre of each tank for strength.

Um, if you got about R100,000.00 for the program I can tell you where to buy it :wondering:

Otherwise I'll look for my book on steel sections, it might have allowable load per span tables in it. Just not sure if it'll have for small sections like angles and rectangular tubing.

50X25x3mm thick rectangular tubing works well though, it'll need extra bracing for a top heavy stand though.
