With the heat we have had over the last few days, I noticed the school is stuck to the surface, even a few hours after a midnight WC ...

Added an air stone to get some surface movement going and to act as a water lift at the same time.

Within a few minutes nobody is solidly stuck to the surface ...

stone is on the opposite side of where the canister is - so it probably adds some much needed circulation and not just surface movement.

based on last years experimentation - this should boots buce root and leaf growth ... lets see.

Also added stone to Lucky13 - since the BBA is winning that battle maybe this has a knock on affect.

It’s fascinating and very useful to follow the journey of this tank - the changes and maturation, your thought process and interventions. Thanks for sharing!

Also reads like a suspense novel / Game of Thrones (I read the whole thread just now for the first time). When you “killed off the leading actor” in 2017 I went “What the h@ll!!! I didn’t see this coming” but then the 2nd scape was breathtaking and I got the point of a rescape.

But when it happened again in 2018 I totally agreed with @pierreschoonraad when he said “put it back right now or I’ll call your mother” You like keeing us on our toes, hey!

Tank looks absolutely fantastic and it’s so inspirational but the 2nd edition might still be my personal favourite. Ek probeer nie moeilikheid soek nie, skuus!

@Pierré Schoonraad Fully agree, that is very clear! @f-fish is truly masterful, highly knowledgeable and generous in sharing his knowledge in such a lovely manner :)

I suppose, in my ideal world, no2 and no3 would both still be in existence. In my house :p

Just be carfull with the advice he gives. Most of the time I need to google what he's talking about, just to make sence of it.

Lol - thanks guys that put a smile on my dial. I am messing with food as a plant supplement at the moment ... more precisely mushrooms .... might be anecdotal but into a first week of feeding the fish some mushrooms and the plants look well healthier .. I have been prepping the tank as an experiment for bringing it back from the dead .. i.e. no WC way too much nutrients etc then wait till one sees some algae (GSA) - i.e. something is now out of balance and plant growth stagnates ... then add some fresh mushroom. This stems from the success of doing the 24x7 aeration that fixed the bacterial imbalance on Lucky 13 and the others - reminder here the thinking was vitamin B12 over supply was being created by the wrong bacteria and that signaled the BBA to grow like crazy. The idea that mushrooms have loads of other B's and none of the B12 ... could kickstart new growth and healthier bacteria even without WC's - again a WC is to flush the system not only of minerals but all sorts of amino acids, maybe growth triggers etc etc ..

But Ja .. I think this type of thread is why some content really needs to be captured on a forum and not on social media .. but maybe that is just me.

Week 1 and the buce is pushing new growth - what changed .. added some mushroom as fish food over and above the rest of the normal routine. I know it is not a salt based nutrient shortage so now we dig.

nah ... just some reading and experimenting, in short we might be missing some more natural ways of keeping things in balance vs just flush and wasting resources all the time, yes this hobby is very very wasteful ...

Oh yes I’d be keen for that! The wastefulness around WC (eg doing water chamges just because) is something that bothers me too.

Remember 90% of the time when you have an algae issue the first thing is do a BIG WC ... I would really like to stop telling people that.

For this to be true we need a different toolbelt ... I am hopping that the mushroom is part of that toolset, just because it is a bit different in thinking.

But time will tell, I am in no rush.

I agree, we need to look at how nature takes care of things.
