Got my new tank today!!!!

Oh, ok, if it's old water + old filter media + old substrate then it'll be ok.

Sorry if I came acros as brash.. was just in a big hurry to get out the office to a site meeting (which was cancelled as I left the office) and felt I needed to stop you before you went to far.

Your tank looks fantastic Def add more plants- I have found as the plants filled in and I crammed more in, the better my tank looked. Left space for the fish to swim in ofcourse So have u decided on wat fish you want to put in?

 

I added a big mirror to the back that also gave a nice look. I'm thinking of discus or maybe angels. but ive been to busy setting up the tank and looking for everything in it. Does anyone have a few ideas. Fish that would work and look great in this tank

 

Dwarf Cichlids! LOL! ADD LOTS OF DWARF CICHLIDS!!!

I think with more plants like vallis, and saggitarius and some more swords, you'd have a nicely planted tank. Angels are always good to watch. Maybe try something different like Keyhole Cichlids or something similar. Keyholes make beautiful display fish when they are happy. They have a lovely mustard yellow colour. Unusual, but very peaceful fish that don't get big.

Congrats on the new tank, looking fantastic already! Have you set up your bio filter yet? Just be careful of putting the heater in the last chamber, I was warned of varying water levels in the last chamber, you don't want your heater half exposed to air and half to water, it will break! I made a syphon out out 20mm tubing, filled up the first chamber with filter floss, the second chamber with bio balls, and the last chamber just a pump, a 1000l/h pump, but as it goes straight up gravity plays a huge role and I think the pump is only pumping at about 45% of what it should/could, but the system works very well, it moves quite slowly and I have tested it for power failures, should the pump go off and the syphon continues syphoning water into the chamber you would think it would overflow your bio filter and drain the tank, but it can't, the second and last chamber completely fill up but then it stops once the water level in the filter is equal to that of the tank, gravity will not allow it to continue and it just stops, very comforting to know that it cannot drain the tank! My last chamber with the pump in always sits around half the level to the 1'st and 2'nd chambers levels, so I would not try and put a heater in there at all, I have the heater in the tank and don't mind it too much being in there, the fish seem to enjoy it in the corner. Hey Peekay. the heater is in the last chamber but i put it as far down as I could. I have a 1500L/h powerhead in there. The suction made some of the silicone that was holding the black part of the sump, come off . But its not a disaster . the water drop is about 5 cm now in the second chamber compared to the first one. would be more if it wasn't for the silicone. But the heater still stays nice and wet. that's the first thing I checked.

 

I have angels and they look awsome, also have a sailfin molly which looks pretty kewl The mirror is a really good idea. Hows ur tank getting on?

 

Its still going well. I've only added 2 more plants but no other fish yet. I lack the funds for now . But I'm saving up

 

Franna, what fish are you thinking of adding to this tank? I have some Parkinsons and 2 x Boesmani rainbows if you want?

 

That should be fine, how are you getting water into the first chamber? I think I need to upgrade from the 1000l/h pump as it really struggles, the water trickles very slowly out the last chamber.

You tank is looking great, hows about some updated shots?

 

Hey. Sorry for the wait. My internet wasn't working due to a tellphone pole that got blown down. Water goes thru some holes/lines cut into the bottom of the chamber.

Slagter tanks for the offer. but im thinking of maybe bettas or ATM just to keep the baby convicts there till they grow to big.

here is an update photo . I added the top rock to add some shade for my plecos and talking catfish. but i really hate the look. any ideas how i can get some shade (im so scared that that rock gets knocked off and breaks my side glass.)

 

Wow, it's starting to get there!! Good stuff. I am liking those swords in the back ground.

One suggestion: Maybe take the rocks out completely. Let it dry totally and then use silicone to attach them together properly. You can also add more rock ad build up quite a nice feature out of it with caves and all that. Just make sure the bottom rocks are completely stable and use plenty silicone...

PS: Dwarfs would look lovely in that tank... It's so green. Convicts would dig that tank to pieces... It would be a sad waste.

 

Ok redid my display tank. Just filled it. Looks rather dull. I was thinking malawi tank. that's why I have no plants in there.. any ideas how i can add more colour.

 

Mmmm I do not know a lot about malawis but the reason you can't keep plants with them is not
because they it but they dig a lot?
What about a nice moss? They can't dig that up. Maybe a few snail shells to help with the ph and color?

 

Think that some Anubias and Java Fern should do fine in your tank ..
