Help needed building a fish tank

Thanks Gareth!! I feel a lot better now. Would it help to put a small fan heater in the tank to speed up the curing of the silicone?

 

for a height of 800 its going to be a real mission to reach the bottom of the tank, and you are just asking for trouble with the 10mm glass for that height, i used an extremly low saftey factor of 2.5 and the minimum glass thickness should be 14mm. if you already have the glass and you going to use it you need to brace the hell out of that tank, bottom bracing, top bracing plus i think you may need to even add a cross brace from front to back.
you dont want to wake up one night to the sound of crashing glass and water all over the floor.

 

I think it might help but not sure.... never did that and as they say all good things come to those who wait....

Good luck on the build. Brace the Sh!t out of it because at 10mm you are running on a razor edge

 

do not rush the silicon curing, let it dry completely

if you feel the urge to grab the hose and fill up beforehand, do some thumb-twiddling exercises, or count roof tiles, or read war and peace... dont rush the build, as you want the end result to last, dont wanna be draining it in a week to fix patches of leaks or wish you had bracing cuz you rushed passed that step...

 

The height of this tank is going to make bracing very very important bracing right around the bottom and top and a centre brace.

Here is my 5 cents. (that's not worth allot)

Build the tank the way you want to. Brace it at the top double 10mm x 40mm. One 10mm x 40mm on the bottom. Then add 2 braces front to back a 3rd of the tank in on each side.

Then let it sit for about 3 - 4 days so that the silicone set 100% maybe put a normal fan on there so it the wind should help it along.

Then when you get to filling the tank take the measurement, front to back in the middle of the tank. While filling check and see if the tank expand. If it does you need more bracing...

 

Here is another question for the building gurus LOL
If you need a 20mm thick base, will joining 2 off 10mm thick panes give you the same strenght? Or will 2 off 10mm panes give you the strenght of say 15mm thick glass?

 

I made a 10mm 1.8m x 600 x 400 with bracing just on the top and one week later it crack,then i replace the side panel and bottom and add bracing at the bottom and on top with one big piece that is from side to side and that's still ok.
What you must remember is your stand it need to handle the wight and need to be level.GOOD LUCK.

 

Sounds like a good idea. I'll wait untill Sunday and then see what happens. I've done the bracing Bottom 50 x 10mm all around and 30 x 10mm all around. And the top 50 x 10mm two all the way around and a 30 x 10mm on top of that with a centre brace
