Is that Zeolite? I think you found your problem if it is. It will leach back ammonia after a while.

Also look a bit clogged up with big and small all together, try and keep similar size media together you want the water to go thru it and not around it for max benefit

Put your sponge in the first basket and fill the other two with as much ceramic rings, matrix etc as possible. Remove the zeolite as already stated.

Put a pre filter sponge on your canister inlet as this will reduce the amount of times you need to clean your canister filter. Leave the filter you have in the tank and clean the sponges in aquarium water frequently.

Regular water changes are a must with treated water and syphon your gravel on a regular basis as also already stated. All fish need good quality clean water, not only tropical and marine. Do not over feed. Fish will always beg for food. Goldfish are huge waste producers. They don't truly have a stomach so food goes in and then right back out. Because they're basically pooping and eating all day long, waste builds up faster than many other species.

Lastly, your tank is too small in my opinion for all the fish you have.

If you do decide to upgrade the tank get one with a sump. Makes life alot easier and adds water volume.

Understood, my tank has a sump, it was a marine tank from previous owner, the problem was that I was being charged an arm and a leg to get the materials to activate it.

What do u mean charged an arm an leg? Sumps are actually more effective than canisters as it holds much more media...canisters just uses less space

I got a quote for media R1500 as it is a deep sump, have all the piping and pump, just the media costs a lot

Connect your sump and use batting on the first compartment
Get whatever amount of media you can afford for now, you can then get a bit every month as you can afford but in the meantime, just the added volume of water will also help
A lot of people use the cheap plastic scrubbies as media in their sumps
They come in packets and are real cheap
Use some of those for starters and you can replace them with media as you can afford

@Neezo Take some pics of your sump layout. Overflow any extra detail that you can and come pop around im not to far from you and sure i can help even if you justget some cheap ideas. And how to run the sump. I have 1 or 2 setups with sumps and most off the other types of filters lets see how we can sort you out
