Yuch, she's got a long way to go til she's 17 or 18. Definitely a lot of expenses involved while she's still growing.

Already on 3rd pair of boots, 2nd vest, 2nd half chaps, 2nd jodhpurs, 4th gloves, but as you say, helmet seems to have lasted, she's still wearing the first one I got her.

Yeah I still have mine from when I was about 16 - I had to pay for it with my pocket money. I haven't sold it or given it away as you never know when you need it. I had two pairs of boots. My only problem with getting riding boots was that the widths often don't fit up to below my knee as I did a lot of sport at school and was bulky in the calves. I kept the boots for shows - wore half-chaps for schooling / working out.

Forgetting to mention that I've had that hat size since I was 12. That has not changed since then.

The safety standard changed shortly after we started riding.
Our riding school wouldn't let you ride unless you had a helmet that complied with the new standards.
Fortunately, mine and my daughters did.

Yeah it's very important for safety gear to check out. Otherwise there's going to be problems. Apparently in the UK when I wanted to work at the stables, they told my aunt that because I am deaf, the insurance won't cover me and accidents do happen at the stables. I won't be able to hear a horse stampede coming and all sorts of other things that could happen. I kinda find it ridiculous as I've worked in stables for a very long time and because I can't hear, I have always been observant of my environment.

I remember at a show that I went to, a girl got kicked in the face by her own horse but the thing is that she did a stupid thing and ran after her horse. I don't blame the horse if he spooked and lashed out because she was chasing him. I would never do that - I wait til the horse stops running and then catch him or her. I've been rather lucky not to get kicked by a horse. Only got a tap on the leg from a pony because I mistook her for her brother and they both look similar from behind. Gypsy was about 2 years younger than him and because someone forced worm medicine down her throat, she hated people and kept on trying to bite everyone. I don't blame her for turning to behaviour like that - I would never do that to a horse or pony. Mr Pie was easy going though, we never had problems with him. I find that the mares / fillies are much more temperamental than the colts / geldings. I've also had a personal up and close encounter with Danero, an Hanoverian stallion - beautiful horse but packed with attitude. He bred several mares at my friend's father's farm in the Underberg and produced a lot of outstanding offspring for showing. The horses all including the stallion have been sold since then - it's been empty for a few years except for his mother's troop of miniature ponies. Funny thing is that the mares I met at the stud were so friendly and loved getting attention so I might be a bit biased on the genders. It actually does depend on the breed - Hanoverian are known for their warm personalities and great showing potential.

That sounds rediculous. Perhaps another stable would have seen it differently?
But they are obsessed with "Health and Safety" in this country.

I have only almost been kicked once. I was coming up behind my daughter and turned away so as not to bump into her. The horse must have gotten a frieght because it lashed out. Missed my knee by mm.

I often ride a 18h horse that gets a bit aggressive with others.
He's easy to ride, but he really doesn't like it if another horse gets too close to him. When I see his ears go back, I know to move him away - quickly!

Yeah I'm lucky i had easy sociable horses to work with.

I agree that its ridiculous with my years of experience in stables and around horses. The health and safety thing tends to be taken too far

Had a good riding lesson on Sat.
Was on Rosie who is an old girl - 27, but ironically is a lot more forward than some of the younger horses I have ridden.
So couldn't do jumping. But did some dressage again.

I have 12 that graze on my property, they belong to my neighbour but they flippin naughty
    Tame but naughty
Saturday morning they figured out how to open the latch on my back gate and the next thing i knew they were grazing in my garden!!!
What a mission to get them out the gate because they all seem to follow the big stallion.. he is stunning.. one of her studs but boy he is a law onto himself and if he doesnt move neither do the rest of them
Eventually one and half packet of carrots down the line they agreed to get out!!

    It's fairly basic stuff.
Our instructor likes her to do it as it helps keep her supple.

working an old horse is actually very good for them. its as soon as you take them out of work that they start to get old age problems. the Mrs has a 19 year old that is in great health. but as soon as he is out of work for a week or two he starts getting stiff and develops joint problems. as soo as you start working him again he is 100%

Apparently I am her only lesson.
Instructor said that a lot of the other riders don't like to go on her because she is so forward. I have gotten the measure of her, so don't really mind.
The only problem is she can't do jumping. So I have asked to be on a different horse next week. Feel kind of bad
