How can I make my own DIY canopy

If you make it from wood, (and it isnt that difficult) use a polyurethane varnish, and make sure you give it enough time to cure. more coats are better.

You can dilute your first coat with the solvent/cleaner you use to clean your brushes. This will allow it to soak in deeper.

For gluing, use a resin/polyurethane glue. Dont use normal wood glue or ponal, as moisture will penetrate the glue

whatever wood you use, make sure it has not been treated with any chemicals (cca, etc) Also make sure it is a "safe" wood. for example, I wouldnt use tambotie.

Make sure afterwards that you cover all exposed metal fasteners (nails screws, hinges, etc) with polyurethane or spray paint lacquer. If you do use screws, spend a bit more and get brass screws. iron expands when it is rusting. bear in mind that coroding copper based items will be bad for some organisms. presumably galvanised will also work.

I have not had exposure to using epoxy resin on the wood, but it should work. (presumably they mean the ones you use for fibreglass?)
