How to feed discus and many other tropical fish as well

    I think the people in the anti beefheart camp say it is not healthy because it is more or less the sole food given to the Discus on a long term basis.

    I remember reading an article by a collector who had done stomach content analysis of wild Discus.
    Surprisingly (well to me), a large proportion of the stomach contents was plant matter/detritus.
    I would have thought it would have been water miggies etc.
    Will see if I can find the article this evening.

    In my experience of keeping discus I have lost 2 large fish that I can attribute to a problem caused by feeding bh. In both instances the fish was the dominant feeder in the group and would simply guts himself on the bh as soon as it hit the water. With not enough roughage in the diet, the bh then rotted in the gut leading to all sorts of bacterial infections and swim bladder problems. If you are not on top of your game, you can loose fish

    Fortunately Dirk brings in a frozen food, Benkers Discus Royal, which has amongst other ingredients, crab and prawn, and I find this to be an excellent substitute for bh and the shell content acts as a great source of roughage.

    are you guys feeding your discus Daphnia?
    my late father always collected daphnia and fed them to his discus, but that was before all the pesticides killed everything!

    Hi @Psy

    I have a culture of Daphnia at home from which I feed the fish now and again. Its a nice food as it gets them hunting and the fibre is good for gut movement.
