Thought I would post a photo of my Vampire/Galaxy Plec.
Being one of the carnivorous ones it loves minced fish and bloodworm.

    Very nice blood sucker, Reedfish.
You can't be from around here with a fish like that.
Send some L spp this way :)

    Hi,
Just updated my profile, I am in the UK.

You get loads of Plecs here, but they cost big time ££££.
This one I actually got quite cheaply. It is from this fish keeper not far from me who was shutting down his fish room in a hurry, and was just selling his fish as urgently as possible. Such a pity I didn't have more tanks :sad2:. He had such good stuff (mainly Plecs) that he was selling at almost for nothing.

When we do get them in SA they are much more expensive. SA is starved of a good range of plecs.

    When will my luck change

Reedfish, you a lucky man/women. Post more pics, as I have joined azuekoi drooling:love:

    Khalid,

Thanks - I am a lucky man
We get a good range here. You can pick up most, even Zebras if you look hard enough and are prepared to pay.

There is a lfs about 10 mins from where I live that has 20+ species/L Nos at any one time.
And then there is one about 1/2 hour from me that would have 50+ species. These guys though have a reputation of being a total rip off.

    I have a L029 Vampire,
A L114 Leopard. But it won't let me photograph it. Every time I come near, it scurries back to the log pile.
A Rusty (No idea of L no) which I will take a photo of when I get a chance.

    @azurekoi.
    Thanks

Leporacanthicus variety are very rare in SA, not many people bring them in. @disco, this could be a L201 that can be confused as the markings are similar. I have seen a number of them at different places. They becoming common and sell from anywhere around R150+ depending on size.
on the odd chance maybe they are Leporacanthicus sp

There are a few black Plecs with white spots. I think there is a Baryancistrus or two, one called the Snowball Plec.

I have tried the Golden Nugget and a Green one(Can't remember name), both of which died soon after I got them.
Apparently, and I found this too, the carnivorous Plecs do much better than the vegetarian and wood eating species.

@Khalid I'm surprised you have not considered breeding The rarer L's or is it a different kettle of fish (pun intended).

If I ever get my fish room set up, I want to have a go at breeding some Plecs.
    Them, Angels and Tangs.

    Have I consider it? yes
Have I experienced the frustration the heartbreak? yes
This is not as easy as it sounds. Consider this:
Variety is scarce in SA, and when we do get some fancy fish, they very young and in poor health and die a few weeks later.
They cost a good penny as well. To start up a colony you need a few fish that survive. At average around R300 x 8 = R2400.
Budget a few grand to be on the safe side.
Because of the expense LFS stock minimum quantities, like 1 or 2. That doesn't help any, as you might end up with two males
If you lucky to find them and buy them, the hard work starts. Qt ,medicate and maintenance.
A few years later at maturity you hope you have a male and female, if not you might never find the same spp again :(
Hence Plecs are not so popular and not many people are breeding them locally.

However there is light at the end of the plec's cave. Over the years LFS are getting in more variety and better quality fish, as well as local breeders are trying there best.Knowledge, Medication and furniture is becoming readily available.

@Khalid. I agree with you totally. Breeding Plecs and other rare fish is a major investment. It's not something you do to make money out of, because you won't. But you do it for the satisfaction and for distributing rare and hard to find fish.

You definately need to start with healthy, good quality fish. Weak, sickly fish will just lead to heart ache.

Am still hoping to set up my fish room......
