Hi @Broder - the batch I have now are probably abt 6 to 8 more weeks away from being ready. But they are healthy and doing well. Only problem is I have a backlog of 22 I need to supply so Im not sure how many will be left
@Reedfish - yes the Tan's do feed Beefheart amongst other foods. They make all their own fish food apparently. I cant confirm this.

I feed mine various things. A fish based food, frozen brine shrimp, mozzie larvae, granules and then my own food mix which I am forever tweaking and tryingvto improve on. Its a heart/fish mix with various additives and extras. I do get very very good results on it though and it is the only food my Heckels eat.
@Flash - Im wondering if youd be saying that if she was not yours....
She is a very lovely fish and thanks for the extended loan period

@Marco ... in general I would agree with you, BUT I have very docile apistos as well (granted, VERY limited amount of apistos species can live peacefully together)

Ok I will post some pics of the room.

Its a simple fishroom with no extravagance-im not the kind of person to go out and do extravagant stuff.
I keep things simple and functional and find ways of improving my fishkeeping experience without losing the parts of the hobby that I love.

Although water changes can be tedious I would not want an auto system. It would rob me of the time it takes to clean and syphon each tank cause that is when I really inspect my fish, look for colour traits or simply find inspiration for a future project or something Id like to achieve.

My fishroom is a single garage (6m × 3m)


In there i have 7 x 1220 x 600 stands that are all 2 tier. I prefer these 4 foot tank size stands for its versatility.
I use standard 4 foot tanks. Some that are 600 wide, others that are 600 deep. All on the same stands


I also have 4 Discus breeding cubes that fit on to the same stands (600 × 600 footprint) and 4 Ram breeding tanks that also fit easily (600 × 450) on the same stands


For Dicrossus I use a shallow tank with a large footprint . Its 900 x 600 x 300mm with water level at 250mm


The Dicrossus maculatus spawned yesterday. Heres the female with some eggs in her cave


I run a 2 tank (1000lit) Discus keeping system for raising young and keeping pairs when not breeding.
The filtration is a design based on Untergassers suggestion, and lots of discussions with Dirk Bellstedt.
Its a wet/dry trickle filter. It runs on approx 30lit of Eheim Substrat pro media. I have more that 40 discus in this system without any issue. The water is pristine and the fish happy
If you look closely you will see some Wild Heckels among that group





I run a combo of filters on the other tanks. HMF's on all the 4 foot tanks along with either a smaller trickle filter or Aquaclear Hob's


These are F1 Manacapuru Angels. They spawned yesterday and now fiercely protect the spawn, even if its only against me



Lighting i use a very simple system I just install myself. I use CFL globes and a spraypainted Yoghurt container as a lamp shade. Works perfectly for my needs.

I have to give you a hard time
But of course-not all Apistos are that aggressive.
Your Trifasciata are probably the best behaved along with Agassizi.
Add a yellow female to the mix though...and its like adding a case of Klipdrift and a few 2lit bottles of Coke to a Bulls/Stormers crowd.

Look the Dicrossus are also problematic-thats why I use the larger footprint tank. Id say they just know when to stop whereas the avg Apisto knows not

Setup looks great, this is evidence that you do not need everything to be high tech and expensive to run a system like yours, although it took allot of planning/money/time and effort to setup I believe it must have been worth it.

Its actually a rather modest set up Id say. In total its just under 4000lit. Not all that much.
@Broder - I feel its important for me to keep it at a hobby level. At this size I still feel as if I can control and enjoy it without it becoming tedious to the point of frustration.
On some days I spent 5 hrs in the fishroom cleaning and preparing things. Most days an hour or two.
I dont want to lose enjoyment.

As far as managing it - I have an approach of breeding most of the fish only once a year. That means I do not flood the market with my fish and also I can focus more on quality than quantity.

You simply do not need high-tec stuff to be a good fishkeeper. Most of the really expensive things out there can easily be replicated at a fraction of the cost AND you can have it be more functional
There is simply NO commercially available filter that can offer me the bio-ability my trickle filter has, and it cost less than R1000 to set up. It can probably handle about 3000lit of water even though I run it on only 1000.
A comparable commercial filter would set you back near R6k

Some may impress their friends with fancy set-ups, but fish just want clean water and good food- they do not care about the cost of the filtration

I honestly didn't know one could used the media you do for a trickle filter thought one must use the plastic bio balls.

Seeing that I'm slowly but surely starting to collect tanks I might in the future need to do some more reading into this and maybe invest in filtering my system with it instead of buying unnecessary equipment.
