I'm curious why the carbon block and an RO unit since the RO has its own inline carbon block?

    -Update-

Finally Finished getting all the piping in now yesterday so each tank now has a fresh water source right at the tank with control value, so water changes will now get easier. I user RO tubing to each tank with RO ball values. Its a cheap option and very easy to plumb. Also I can add on as I like as required. I also set it up in such a way that it is a bit of a manual 2 way system in that one end, I can feed in fresh tap water via the carbon block for ordinary fresh water chlorine free and by turn on a valve and turning off another valve, I can feed in RO water from the other direction if required. So I have the best of both worlds.

Next step, is to start working on the overflow system for each tank, to drain down into a central sump and then pump out the dirty water via a submersible pump. (Rem fish room is below ground level so drainage has been a bit of a challenge!) This water will then be pumped into a 250L holding tank out side that will be used to water the garden.

Keep green and keep our planet clean!

The Carbon block only really removes the chlorine/chloramine and leaves most of the other minerals in the water so the PH pretty much remains the same from before the block to after the block, where as the RO unit will strip out just about everything including all the minerals and leave you with water that is basically TDS 5 or below. I only use the RO for making the brackish water mix for water changes for the Puffer fish at present and in the QT tank where I dose with aquarium salt and try to keep the PH neutral for all new arrivals from unconfirmed sources.

I also tested the output on carbon block in terms of water quality with regards to chlorine levels and it seems to do the job perfectly, according to my tests. I basically got the parts to put the carbon block together for less than the price of a tin of Seachem Safe. So with a bit of good old elbow grease and some blood, sweat and a few tears, I got it all together and working nicely. So far after 3 weeks of using it for water changes, no more fatalities, no more shimmering, no more unhappy fish. No more wild PH swings either.

Thank you. I've always wanted to set up a carbon block for water changes. Would you mind sharing how you did it please?

Quick update, this week woke up one morning to angels spawning, but sadly when I got home they had eaten them all. But it was their first try so next time may have better luck.

Then came home today and went down to the fish room this afternoon and gues what Cory's finally spawn literally all over the tank.[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

Wow that’s a lot of eggs! Do you have a spare small tank to transfer some of the cory eggs to? With good flow.

My adult cories keep on eating the eggs. Perhaps because you have so many eggs some may survive in the tank?

Yup I already removed a whole batch of them and they are in a small holding container that I placed onto of my fishroom air pump, which does 2 things, firstly it vibtares the container ever so gently, so hopefully it keeps them from all fungusing over also it keeps the water temp at around 26.

I did at a drop of methylene blue and have chained the water 50% every 12 hours. So far it looks like some of the eggs are viable and may just hatch. I also put in a tiny airstone.

Once they hatch and used up their egg sacks, I have a small green water tank to move them to and hopefully by then the brineshrimp will have also hatched succesfully and so I will have additional live fresh food for them. Will have to wait and see.

Back in the spawning tank its still on going and so I cannot keep up. So in that tank I created move water movement and stronger flow and filled it with more plants live java moss. Thos guys are goung to have to fend for them selves if they ever hatch.

It takes a lot of work and time to try to move all the eggs succesfully. It tooks 4 hours yesterday just to move the eggs I could and get setup for them.

Actually its a platinum and a silver and black. I need to setup an additional tank for them if I am going to be successful at spawning and raising them. But it was good practice for them.

Lovely! There is something weirdly satisfying about seeing those clumps of eggs all over the place - even if they are soon eaten
