Exciting morning, the cory eggs I harvested on Saturday afternoon have hatched. I am not sure how many but it looks like at least 20 plus. The fry are tiny, I actually did not realize they were that small.

Most still seem to have their yolk sacs still which I am sure will be gone bery quickly, so I will start with feeding green water and hopefully the brine will have hatched by thursday. By friday or Saturday I then plan to move the survivers into the small green water tank that I have ready for them. I think this will give me my best chance at raising as many as I can succesfully.

Sadly all the eggs in the main breeding tank have disappeared and its hard to say if any hatched, their are lots of hiding places for the fry so we will see, you never know.

    Congratulations!
If you're brine shrimps don't hatch in time, I fed my fry tetra mini granules that I crushed up into a powder amd they seemed to enjoy that!

@T.Guppy Well Done on the tetra fry. You are going to have to tell me one day how you did that!. I saw it done on Marks Aquatics YouTube channel. Yes on the powder food, I already got that ready and also some spirulina powder which is easly available today in most pharmacies.

Some updates on the cory fry: all the ones that harvested from the eggs are doing well, it looks like at least 50 now. Here is a picture/s:

Very nice. Just like that you have a massive shoal of corys. Hard part starts now though - keeping them alive for 2 months. After that they tend to survive in my experience

@TheGrissom Yup that's the real challenge now! Just wish the general weather temp would be more stable in GP, having wild swings of temperature on tanks without heaters and trying to do it the way nature would. So I keep asking my self how would this have worked in nature, without my interference! Have you ever used Oak tree leaves in any of your tanks for shelter for fry as well as the food source they may produce?

Finely crumbed boiled egg yolk is also a good fry food.
Just feed sparingly and remove uneaten left overs asap as it can foul the water quickly

I have used capata leaves and oak leaves, both work well but they need to be in the water for a few days to grow the infusoria/bacteria the fry feed off of. In nature there is a billion liter river in a tropical climate so food and weather arent really an issue. The trees around the river drop leaves into the water creating plenty of hiding spaces for fry and making the water brown with tannins. The snow melt drops the water temp a few degrees, this signals spring and the corys spawn.

Just been a bit hectic with work, so this update is a little overdue. The fry were all transfered to a little 20L growout. Their were about 25 give or take. They were really tiny but have plenty space to hide and scavenge as this is what their natural environment would be like in the wild.

Whilst its really difficult to say just how many have made it so far, I was about to call it a day last night and right this batch off to experience for next time, a couple actually made an appearance. They seem to be co- habitting quite nicely with the bunch of mixed crystals that I threw in the same tank and for now, their seems to be a nice symbiotic relationship going on.

Meanwhile over in the main parents tank, which is filled with lots of rocks and small pebbles, driftwood and lots of plants, a bunch of endlers and a very high flow water output, a number of babies have also started to show themselves. However they are almost 3 times in size compaired to their artificially raised siblings in the 20 L.

Lessons learnt from this. Number one, need more pebble piles in the parents tank. Number 2, rather try to scatter as many eggs once they are laid and fertilised into the rock piles. Number 3, then let mother nature do her thing, she's better at this than I am!

Fishroom update, I finnaly had some time to finish the DIY build of my own version of a home made Fluval 2.0 light. I am very happy with the results so far. Only cost around R150 to build give or take a few cents.

Best part of all its 12v. So its safe!!!

Thanks @MariaS, I must admit that I am quite impressed that I even managed to get this far with a planted tank on my first attempt in 20 plus years since I last bought a plant.

And I am now starting to understand the attraction to planted tanks and the sense of satifaction that one gets from the results.

Quite honestly its really not as hard as it is made out and not really as expensive. I used plain PFS on this one with a little bit of aquarium gravel mixed in, some drift wood and plants mainly from clippings and swopping with other hobbiests and thats the result so far. I like to call this my low tech, high teck DIY planted tank.

It looks great! I’m always in awe of people who can do DIY and it looks very professional actually.
Glad you’re enjoying the plants, and agree that it doesn’t have to be super expensive and super difficult, but is very satisfying
Your plants look healthy and vibrant!

I think when you put in the hard work yourself you appreciate what you have in a different way

Its awesome to feel you achieved it all by yourself

Here is a short video of the actual planted tank as mentioned above. Hopefully when I get back from holiday it still looks ok.
