@Sean J... Its a tough schedule and its being relaxed a bit as of today but up to now the feeding regime is:

7:00 Berkers or SV 2000 (Prof B's food)
8:00 Dry food, either tetra bits, or Ocean Nutrition flakes
    9:00 Blood worm
    10:00 Prof B's breeder flakes
14:00 Mysis shrimp or enriched brine shrimp
    16:00 Benkers or SV2000
    18:00 Enriched brine shrimp
    20:00 Prof B's flakes
    23:00 Benkers or SV

Bear in mind these are small feeds but even so water quality is always a challenge. Once a week (mostly on a Friday) I feed only times and then mostly brine shrimp at that (high in roughage). Luckily I live 50m from my business premises so I can maintain this schedule religiously.

Since they are now 8 months old I can relax their feeding to about 6 times a day, ultimately it will scale down to about twice a day once they reach their 1st birthday.

Thanks to everyone for their positive remarks and thanks to God for putting such wonderful people in my path and allowing me care for these amazing creatures :)

YOH! That's a lot of feeding! Luckily you're so close to work! Otherwise I recon you'd have feeding timers coming out of your ears!

    Hi

First just let me say-@jedigenie, amazing bud! Your fish are really gorgeous, healthy and seem incredibly happy! I cant compliment you enough on the amazing job you have done.
When I sent these guys to Genie they were just about 5cm in size. I doubt many people realise just how much dedication and consistent effort it requires to ensure such small Discus grow up to be these amazing semi-adults.

    @jpvd007

Yes, indeed. The dad was a high body snakeskin, very similar to Genies fish, although the mother's extra colour ensured these guys have quite a bit more colour than what he had.

When Genie and I first discussed his fish, he explained to me that he wants neutral coloured, as close to wild type fish as possible, not the so called "smartie box" types that are so regularly seen in LPS. These guys, though some are Snakeskin, are very neutral and tbh quite basic in their make-up. Nonetheless, they are extremely striking, and exhibit all the features I love most in Discus.

The next challenge Jedigenie is facing is beating the Asians! In Asia, via 200% daily water changes coupled with good feeding, they have managed to decrease the time gap for a generation to spawn to as little as 10 mths. These are two months away, and maybe, just maybe they will surprise us!

    Rgds

    Small update :)

As I am sitting here now I am watching the y-bar laying eggs on the pot. No male present at this time though.

Few months earlier than I would have liked but I guess fish cant tell time :)

    Hey Genie,

congrats on the Spawn. At least these guys are big and bulky, so having them spawn so early shouldnt be the end of the world. Im amazed that at this young age they spawned, really very young! Pics?

@hviviers, thanks for the compliments, much appreciated.

I've actually decommissioned the sump since there are only 4 fish left in there. I still have the pieces though. Will take some pics later and post them.

Hi @jedigenie I've been reading all posts re discus on the forum for the past 4 weeks. Being a discus lover myself and having joined the forum last month when I needed help on my discus tank, I'm happy to report all original discus survived & I got 8 more, all around 4-5cms big. I am obsessed with my babies and loving every minute I clean the tank or feed them, they are quite tame and whenever I put my hand in the tank whether to feed or clean they come & nibble, one did give me a bit of a bite though, I got more of a fright than anything else. Please post some recent pics of your discus, I would love to see how they look now & how big are they?

Here's a more recent pic of the bunch and a pic of the sump as requested.

The sump is basically a smaller bin with holes drilled in the bottom suspended with cable ties inside the larger bin. The lid of the larger bin was cut to accommodate the piping. I had 6l matrix in the smaller bin which was covered by a layer of filter floss. Additionally it housed a 300W heater and a 2700l/h return pump. I ran it for nearly a year with no hickups.

I have only seen fish like this on the net....since my 4 foot is empty, it makes me want to get Discus again, but between my Bettas and then Discus, someone will not get so much attention....haha

    Hi Jedigenie
Congrats on the great results you are showing. Marco mentioned in a previous post how you were looking for neutral/close to wild type colouration. The black ring in the last few posts looks like the wild type gene cant be too far away! This is stunning!
    Cheers

Thanks for the kind words all. I really cant take all (or even most) of the credit for them turning out so well. @Marco really did hold my hand every step of the way and patiently answered every question I could throw at him. It really was a case of never having to use my brain when I could just use his hehehe.

I can never give an accurate answer (must be a man thing). I can tell you though that I saw a pair of Danziger discus which I thought was massive and now mine are far bigger.

Gosh Hennie, that's a most flattering compliment. Thank you kindly :embarrest:

Thanks Rowland, my "ideal" discus are Xingu type fish, I prefer discus that look natural and graceful. I've never been a fan of the mix and match look, I would much rather have a large group of similar looking fish.

Thanks again for the compliments :)
