    Herp Lab Eclipse Black Sand

    Premium display sand
    100% organic
    Sterilised
    Natural heat treated sand
    Suitable for all reptiles
    600 microns

Now...who told you this stuff can be used in an aquarium? I'd be quite keen on black substrate if I can be assured that it is safe to use.

Is the sand Sharp? I put that stuff in my cactus pot. Doing a vinegar test. Looks to me like lava rock sand. The grains are perfect for aquariums . . .not sure about corys and eels loving it as much. . .

ive had them before.. its very fine so its prone to compacting (which is not good for plants) to fix this, add some hydroton to the deeper areas of ur substrate..

the edges seem pretty sharp (not sure abt this but they defn not round) so maybe not such a good idea for fish who dig through the substrate.. other than that, its a nice colour and really emphasises the colour of fish like neons..

ive had it in one of my breeding tank for years now and no problems besides compacting.

Ah...so if I use PFP as bottom layer capped with 3cm of this stuff then there should not be much issue with compacting as its only 3cm?

3cm should be fine im guessing.. just my suggestions.. this type of substrate IMO is not very good for plants. i never had success with it.. but then again this was in the early days when i didn have much experience of adding stuff to the bottom of this substrate.

i use it now with my anubias plants and java fern where the plants sit above the substrate and gets the nutrients from the water column.

just rem to becarefull, it really doesnt allow air to pass through the substrate.. so roots of plants may rot.. also, fish waste sits on top of the substrate as it cannot sink to the bottom layer so it does make the tank look 'dirtyer'.. maybe add some bigger gravel mixed with ur pfp mix (not really sure on how pfp works but if its just palm fiber u should add some gravel)

    ok ...

My cories are fine with this in fact they breed..

My plants also grow like crazy .... it may be that the problem only starts later ..

I wanted to sell the substrate but I dont think its a good idea anymore as I dont want people to point fingers at me later when they get problems...
