Hi @MariaS . I really hope all the best with that beauty of an Arowane. I am glad you did the paper work, it is much easier. Hope you will find plenty of joy with her.
I must say, she is a very nice colour and also looks very healthy!

Woaaw, never knew you would need paperwork for a fish. U do go thru a lot of trouble for your fish. So is it like some kind of license? Beautiful fish btw.

    Thank you @Mister MP

Both our other Arowanas have their certificates and are chipped too... after all you want to know what you paying for

She already brings me much joy as she is quite a character and as small as she is, she is almost taking food right out my hand
Colour... looks promising but patience and time with Arowana.... their colour develops over a few years so we now wait and see

    Thanks @Ammar

In order to import any fish, you need an import license or permit
That allows you to bring any fish that are not Blacklisted or Red listed

Red listed means its gone on the CITIES LIST/Red List endangered species and can no longer be caught in the wild for the Aquarium trade
In order to import, the seller has to supply you with a CITIES certificate provided by the breeder (who has to be registered with CITIES) proving that the fish is captive bred and how many generations into captive breeding it is.
In the case of Arowana, they are also chipped and the chip number has to be on the certificate

Up until April 2018, this was not needed to bring in Asian Aros but in April this year they went on the Red list due to becoming endangered in the wild so you now need to have a CITIES certificate proving its captive bred
This obviously means extra costs and you have to buy from registered breeders

Shuh, you must really love this fish to go thru all this trouble.
What is their life expectency @MariaS ? And are they fussy fish?

Also what if they breed in your tank, do you have to go thru all that trouble to register them as well?

@Ammar, Its very hard to explain because most people will shake their heads and think you crazy but yes... We love them to pieces and they become part of the family.
You can only understand the bond which grows between an Asian Aro and its owner and family once you have raised one and you live with it
This happens slowly as they grow into adulthood
Its so noticeable that sometimes if something is wrong and you had a bad day, you will glance at the tank and she ( talking about Spooky now) will be standing dead still staring at you across the lounge like she is calling you.
Its not food related because if you go to the tank it doesnt go into a frenzy for food like a cichlid, it will stare at you or rub itself against the glass looking for attention
Like I said, you have to experience it to understand because telling someone doesnt make sense to them

They not fussy to keep at all, clean water and they easy to keep
Obviously they get big so you need adequate filtration but that goes with keeping any big fish

They do have a mind of their own and can be temperamental and sulk and not eat for couple days if they not happy with something you have done , they will actually go right up to the food, touch it, look at you with a "im pissed off look" and turn away from the food!! Its hilarious
    But eventually they give in...

As for breeding....no.... chances of them breeding in your tank are one in a million... they breed them in huge outside ponds/dams
You also cant sex them unless you vent them
There are odd recordings of eggs being laid but i havent found any records of them actually hatching in a tank

That is so interesting @MariaS, so they are part of the family, i guess u need to be a fish lover to understand what u mean.
I envy you, but would probably be on stress meds if i kept any of your fish.

Its not much of a secret as most people know what the LFS was selling the last two for
It depends on what you want
A Red Tail Gold you looking at more or less around 11k
The high back gold around 18k
The Super red and Chili red ( like the one in the thread I updated earlier today 'Flash and Polkadot's new home) the 24 carat and blue base you looking at around 25k

Stress meds for me too please at those prices.

You probably have at least 100K in fish that's like new car deposit money

Yes... probably around that value in Flash and Polkadot's tank but over and above the fact we love the fish, it was also an investment into a breeding project and in order to do that, you need to lay the money out first

The rays are part of the breeding project in order to be able to make good quality and parasite free babies available in SA at affordable prices
The three litters we have had, have probably paid back a third of the investment in that tank and I have sold them at less than half of what the LFS is selling them.
The babies were in excellent condition, parasite free and touch wood no one so far has lost a single baby even though they went to people that had never kept rays before
During the course of next year, if all goes well, we should have pure black diamond babies available.... the LFS is bringing the pure black diamonds in at around 15k each

WE are also using the mini marble gene to reduce size in the hybrids we have bred so far as, smaller rays will make it easier for those with smaller tanks to be able to keep them and still enjoy them
So yes... it was or has been a fairly big investment in something we love but will ultimately benefit the South African hobbyist

Awesome work your doing here @MariaS. Dedication to the last drop of water.

The basic idea, I'm getting, is that you are not directly trying to make a profit out of your investment. But rather making these awesome fish available to a broader group of aquarist. Keep it up and good luck growing out the swimming dragon.

Spot on @pierreschoonraad, i feel a lot out there is so overpriced and lfs as well as breedere can still make money by cutting down a bit on the profit they making... same goes for the shrimp market and all sorts of fish...
