    @wsteene,
    I like the Frontosa.
    Do you get a good range of cichlids there?
    In particular I am thinking of Rifts and Discus

    Looks like a lot of the stores around south africa... In fact I personally think we have much nicer stores here...

    You should see the stores in Japan though. Damn!

    Wow great variety, great display of outside ponds etc. I would love to get my hands on those easter island heads. Wonder what the prices are like comparatively?

    Dwarf Gourami $18 = R169.20, Rainbows $20 = R189.20, Mollies $10 = R94.60. Very expensive with the current exchange rate of Aus $1 = R9.46

    @Reedfish, quite a range of cichlids available here but discus are very scarce. Only saw one lfs selling discus and I've been to quite a few at this point in time.

    @Ray Port Elizabeth, as said by @Reedfish, those are axolotl but a couple of lfs do sell newts around here, especially the firebelly newts. Planning on starting a setup with some newts, love those little creatures and can create an awesome setup. I'll take some pics when coming across them again especially the setups.

    @HEIHACHI, in price comparison if you convert back to ZAR it seems expensive but if you take it in NZ$ it is not that expensive. @andries, we don't work with AUS$ here, it is the NZ$ and the exchange rate at time of this post is R8.3711, but yes, it seems expensive in terms of ZAR value. @lep2soma, I was quite amazed to saw the size of the bowfront, it is quite huge. A 250l Juwel is selling with its cabinet for roundabout NZ$800. Haven't seen any ADA substrate here and if you ask about it they never heard about it. Seachem fluorite is available in each lfs even the smaller lfs. It is selling for about NZ$40-NZ$50 a bag.

    Consider that jungle has Seachem Flourite 7kg - R378.00 : Jungle Aquatics, Petshop Superstore and Retail Outlet @ R378

    Using the adjusted index for GDP per person of the Big Mac Index ( see Interactive currency-comparison tool: The Big Mac index | The Economist ) US$ (NZ) 4.30/ (SA) 1.82 = 2.3 so a bag of seachem at NZ$ 45 (avg) = 45*8.37 = R 376 (seems not to bad) but applying the BIG mac ratio means the consumption price is more like 376 / 2.3 = R163 per bag. That makes NZ affordable if you are earning NZ$ and living like a big mac king.

    Then again if you take the base line of Substrate for Freshwater Planted Aquariums: Seachem Flourite Planted Aquarium Substrate at Original 7kg/15.4 lbs, CD-923222, $16.69 and its related big mac index US$ (US)4.56/ (SA) 1.82 = 2.5 and the us DR Foster and Smith costs 16.69*9.97= R 166.32 and then applying the big mac consumption price 166.32/2.5 = R66.53 per bag.

    Meaning that the 378 per bag we pay could cost R66.53 or 5.7 time less - now consider that the big mac index undervalues our burger by 36% it means we should probably be paying 66.53*1.36 = R90 per bag call it R100, Take that 100 and double for luxury and shipping tax - so R200 it means to me that we are still paying a premium for our hobby. Since we are happy to handover an extra 178 per bag.

    Ok time for a coffee.

    Thanks for the PICS love seeing the hobby shops in other countries.

    Later Ferdie

    BTW the more I look at the numbers the less it makes sense - if somebody can confirm the math. Glad I am not paid in SA big mac burgers ;-)
