no2/no3 test kits

    How reliable is the no2/no3 test kits in the lfs??

    No2=Nitrite test kits are pretty accurate.
    No3=Nitrate test kits are notoriously inaccurate.Two kits from two different manufacturers may not give the same reading.

    I have found NO3 kits to be out by as much as 30ppm. You will need to make a reference solution and calibrate the kit everytime before use. As a result I no longer use these kits at all.

    reliability?....it exists...

    Depends on brand, storage conditions,testing method, rate of deterioration of reagents, etc..
    ie. Many variables.

    Critical application of Nitrate test results vary
    ..sensitive fish?
    Plant, Algae culture and management?
    Water change intervals?
    Feed and Filter efficiency decisions?

    I however find that Seachem MultiTest Nitrite and Nitrate is as good as it gets for the keen hobbyist...
    taking into account main factors:
    high and low scale measurements
    ease-of-use
    Cost effective
    accuracy , and precision.
    They DO come with supplied Reference standards, so it's always easy to see if your kit is peforming reliably.
