Insurance paid half of my claim - I will be adding some funds to get new tank as display. Old tank will be repaired and used again later.

@MariaS could you perhaps send a pic of how your tank is braced? even if you can just take a pic from the bottom? I have a 1.2 m (4ft) tank with the capacity of 220 liters. It is also 2nd hand and only has a square tubing stand with no support in the middle. Definitely want to fix THAT problem soon!!

Bracing can be seen on photo if you look carefully. Long strips length wise top & bottom with further cross braces (not visible) at the top.
IMHO I do not think a 4ft would give too many problems - I have abused my 4ft's in the past quite a bit without a problem.

Its a little difficult to take a picture of the inside bracing with a full tank but I will try
The top and bottom bracing are the same, the bottom is 30mm of glass
The bracing is done back to front at each end as well as at 1m intervals
There is also bracing lenghtwise from one end to the other
The insides on the corners have also been braced vertically

Please note that all this bracing is on a 2.3m tank.
I am no expert tank builder but as @cft has said, I think a 1.2m tank does not need to have as much bracing but some of the more experienced guys can comment on that

If you refering to support on the stand, I dont think you need a piece every 30cm on 1.2m tank... if you realy want piece of mind then maybe one piece in the centre
@cft... no problem.. hey.. we all in this together and I am no expert..

We have an old saying, "a cat that has been burned is scared of cold water" I know it doesnt sound so great translated but after our "accident" I think I have become neurotic about bracing and supports...

I see it was a bit of a miscommunication...I was talking about bracing the stand, stupid for not clarifying when I asked about the bracing...My 4ft tank is braced on the inside along the bottom (an extra glass strip on each side on the inside where the bottom meets the side panels) and then again at the top at the ends from back to frnt (abot 10cm wide) and another one in the middel from back to front (about 20cm) on top of the tank onto the edges. MariaS said I could add a square tubing in the middle of the stand for piece of mind. What do you think cft? The stand is square tubing and the edges of the tank rest on that (so only the outside rim of the tank actually rests on the stand) the stank has no support in the centre of the bottom glass panel. I goodness I hope I am making sense...Just don't want it to burst! I have 4 parrot fish an a large albino BN pleco in there!

 

My 4ft's have been running for years on the commercial stand without supports in the centre. I have even loaded some tanks with lots of rock in the past without any issue. I would be careful when going beyond 4ft though.
If you want to - stronger is always better.......

Ok Cool, thanks for the info. I really appreciate it. I got 4 parrot fish with the 4ft, they were treated horribly (when I got there to pick it up, it was only filled up 1/3 and with no filter and a 50 watt heater, the water was absolutely disgusting) so now I am trying to give them the best home possible. I have added about 5 rocks the size of my hand and I'm afraid to add more in fear of the tank cracking, but I've read that cichlids love rocks, and they dig a lot so rock is better than a lot of plants, just don't want the tank to crack! How many rocks did you have in there if you have to guess?

If I refer to rocks they are large - refer to my usual type hardscape replicated in all my tanks through the years. My one 4ft had a pile reaching the surface of the water at one stage. Some of the rocks can only be placed when with the help of a second person.

 

That tank looks really awesome! Where did you get that background? Is it 3D or just a "paper"?

So I could easily add a lot more with the stand I have now? It is a commercial stand made for a 4ft.

 

AND where did you get the rocks that are inside the tank?

 

Background is only print from LFS - wish I could make a better one some day. Would be nice if it could be darker but I do not really like a solid black/blue background.
Rocks are from Chuenespoort south of Polokwane - Had quite a laugh when we moved to Pretoria as the removals company did not believe me when I told them they must load the rocks - took some time to convince them that I "cannot move without them"..... :laugh:

 

I have been looking for that type of print out everywhere! All they have are those ugly ones that look like ugly plants or a waterfall or crap:notrust:. Found one with rocks, but it had fake plants edited in...so no luck. I got some rocks next to our office building. How do you check to make sure they are safe for the fish and don't contain metals? I am always super skeptic. Could have imagines the movers being weird about the rocks, haha. #onlyinsouthafrica
