Agreed good bang for my buck so far going to by a few hundred rands worth of tubes and another 2 units for the ballasts as backup. These puppies are running nice and cool in my new lid I built for them. Now if only I can afford a pressurized co2 system.
Yeap - I check a few days ago, they only had old stock of tubes (be sure to check the K rating on the replacements) ... hope 2013 brings more units at 6500K
I'm using a Opple 20 watt CFL on a emersed setup, works well enough.Got a crypt flower to show for my efforts.
I followed this thread last year & always check when I'm at Builders. Picked up 1x T5 6500K 28W for R20 today. Swapped out 1x 10000K with the 6500K.
Indeed - I even found opple T8 4ft tubes ... no complaints from my side they seem to be working fine.
both 4ft clear and lucky13 blackjack had but I have gone back to a T8 so that I can submerge it and get the benefit of it heating the water for winter.
I'll take a pic this evening...though I can't say I've noticed a major difference in the light colour.
Can not do it with the opple units since the 220 and ballast is in the unit, normal T8's with the ballast removed from the light seems to glow in my tanks - not recommended, health hazard, own risk and all that ... (apply standard internet logic here - just because you see it on the internet does not mean it is something that can, must, should be tried ) See Tropical Aquariums South Africa if you missed the thread on it. Later Ferdie
I wasn't really wondering about the light colour but just more of a side by side comparison of the growth comparison of the plants under different lighting compared to the opples.
That is seriously difficult - need to be the same water column for 1 and probably a diffuser to stop light pollution, since HM grows like a weed it might be possible - let me ponder what it would take. What tubes would you like to see compared ?
Haha @f-fish you are way too thorough and generous. Side by side would be cool, but I was just thinking of a side by side pic from what the tanks look liked up until before the opples were installed and then one after a period of time from when the opples were installed. Its just that I'm seriously doubting that such a cheap unknown brand light can produce good growth, it's just too good to be true .
Yeah I hear you ... well lets see 4f-clear is just opple at this point in time, so give it a few more weeks and make the call. Osram seems to be the only other T5 I can find in this wattage and length .. it is 600lm more and double the life expectancy but I am comparing cool white. Look opple is cheap - maybe to cheap ? 2 tanks, same substrate, same plants (same starting size), same water column, different lights If anyone can do it it's @f-fish
So I have a 90x60x30 high that would take two tubes no problem, I have the 3ft T5 opple - but only T8 3ft other tubes ... - so still contemplating this. hmmm
