Oscar Alternatives

Saw oscars in the shop with fancy long tails.

 

Those Long fin ones look a little bit too much like Goldfish to me.


What about Mudkips/Axolotls (making new thread)

 

ok ,but dicuss are boring ,and timid and fussy and sickly etc but if you like and know your stuff about them then do.

ya and the fins wont last they proberbly get nipped by something .i have had it with my oscars so they are sold to a doc with a 2m tank so they will be happy

 

Axolotls are illegal, but you can find them generally. Any Polypterus would be a good choice...different and also very interactive. There are a few young p. endichleri's available in ct at the moment

 

At this stage I figure I might as well just stick with Oscars


But first I figure I will try and clean up those scratches on my glass while the tank is dry, and then put some fertilizer under the gravel when I start her back up, and see about planting the thing to death.

And then I can just buy whatever I want when I see it in a shop.

 

I'd second the Polypterus endlicheri/bichir, my girlfriend is keeping one and they are quite "pet-like" and fun to feed.

 

Ill say it again......JACK DEMPSEY its a looker and grows large

 

Even a group of Firemouths will look great, with a group of say 6 angels will also have a nice effect.
Make sure you know witch way you go, before putting in plant substrate etc.

 

I don't find them to be very active, especially once they get to the 20cm+ stage. While they are very interesting, it's best to mix them with other fish that occupy the upper layers of the tank.

Firemouths prefer harder, more alkaline water (pH 7.5 and upish), while Angels - as hardy and adaptable as they are - much prefer to live in softer acidic waters (pH 7.0 and below). Not a good mix IMO - but if you can get some more peaceful Central Americans, like Blue Acaras, I'm sure that they'd make a great mix.

 

stick with oscars if you wish ,but there are many other options ,i had a jack dempy and my malawi beat the swim bladder out of that guy ,but they are also boring they just sit and look at you ,but they are fearless for they size ,you can hand feed them and stuff

 

Yeah I agree that a bichir probably won't satisfy on its own.

I just got 4 of those - not very interesting, and don't get very big either.

 

Yeah I figure we'll be sticking with a good old Oscar, maybe an Albino/Lutino one this time round.

Drained the tank on the weekend, now to polish out some scratches.
