Petition for legalization of fresh water shrimp.

@RobK - not that I really know of. My local stores have only ever had cherry shrimp and amanos available in the past. The Caridina typus I mentioned above does sell in pet stores in other countries, so perhaps it is available on the import lists.

Of the other shrimp genera, I know that some Macrobrachium species are occasionally sold, but again not that I've seen personally.

 

@ SalmonAfrica, these are my guys... I'm not sure if I have a mix or if the markings differ slightly between individuals? Excuse the picture, they are taken with a phone.

 

Probably Caridina nilotica, the native species. These range across Africa.

There are also Furry arm river prawns on the east coast and some other species of shrimp in the Western Cape estuarine areas.

 

Would love some prawns in my tank, but don't they need brackish water?

 

Prawns and shrimp are pretty much the same. Just naming really. I believe Macrobrachium sp are freshwater

 

Always thought prawns were bigger than shrimp?
