I have just heard on the radio that the Australian batsman, Phil Hughes has passed away.

Yeah...sad news. Was in a coma since this weekend after being bowled against the head (by Abbott...not South African, NSW bowler), machines switched off this morning

Very very sad, a tragedy for his friends and family, as well as his country and team mates. Much as we love to hate the Aussies on the field, this really shocked us.

I hope it does not have huge ramifications for the way cricket is played, as there always seems to be knee-jerk reaction after something like this happens. If bowlers can't bowl bouncers anymore, it would mean batsmen can stand on the front foot and just whack everything coming to them. It would make cricket much less exciting and would give batsmen the complete upper hand.

@dorff - I doubt it will change...same thing happened in the 95 rugby world cup, when the player from Ivory Coast broke his neck. None of the laws with regards to rucks where changed (then) to the the risk. Lately laws have changed, not for safer playing conditions, but to speed up the game and make it more flowing.

It is unfortunate, but one of the risks you take in playing professional sport. Injuries (even death) is inevitable. I played professional Polocrosse for a number of years...and we had a Springbok die on the field for 5 consecutive years. It is unfortunate...

On one hand, yes, if it can be avoided, one wouldn't want to see this happen again.
On the other, would be a shame if the authorities banned bouncers for eg.
