For what purpose do you need the Purigen ? I used it in my canister to get rid of the Mopane wood stain and it works like a dream.

Funny I have been thinking about adding purigen to my filter. My driftwood is leeching a lot and its affecting my plant growth due to the light not penetrating but I have heard mixed reviews on Purigen

I would like to try but untill then i dont believe it. According to my friend which is a consultant for water purifications for munisipatities says Tanic acid is a chemical binding and it can only be taken out by way of a floculant like aliminuim chlore hydrate which chemically breaks the binding.

Im going to test this with a 50 L tanki and teabags. No water changes!

Purigen most definitely DOES remove wood leeched Tanic acid. It cleared my tank up in 3 days when I added my new wood. But after a week the purigen stopped working because it was completely saturated. However it can be recharged. (Only a number of times tho).

My logic is why go the Purigen route, (which is actually a high maintenance procedure considering you need to recharge it all the time) when Activated Carbon removed the Tanic Acid as well.

This is what I do now. A/C removed my Tannic Acid for about 5-6 weeks, and by then I know it's saturated and need replacing in any case.

I've also stopped buying new wood off the shelf in the LPS. Whenever I want wood, I buy wood that is already in the LPS tanks. It's already waterlogged and sinks, and because many people don't know they can buy it as well, it's often finished leeching by the time I purchase it. Granted you pay a little bit more, because wood it sold per KG, and the fact that it's waterlogged weighs it down. But hey... what's a little extra to pay when you know it's not going to leech.

But then I also need to mention that I really think people's opinions on leeched wood and tanic acid in a tank is so blown out of proportion. Look at it from this way... we go completely out of our way to give our fishy friends the absolute best environment, and to try and make it as natural as possible. We steer clear or adding unnecessary chemicals. We keep up our water changes, and make sure that we try and mimic the wild as much as possible. We want our fish to be as happy and healthy as possible too. Have you ever noticed the difference in your fish's activities and mood when they are in a tannic stained tank?? The tannic stained tank is far more natural to a fish than a crystal clear tank. There's a hatchery in my area that actually has ALL their fish in stained water purely because the fish are more lively, healthy, and colouring better. It also induces them to spawn more comfortably.

    Just my 2cents.

A quick cut and paste below BUT I have had great effects from Purgien - removing yellow colour and polishing water :

Purigen® is a premium synthetic adsorbent that is unlike any other filtration product. It is not a mixture of ion exchangers or adsorbents, but a unique macro-porous synthetic polymer that removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water at a rate and capacity that exceeds all others by over 500%. Purigen® controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds. Purigen’s™ impact on trace elements is minimal. It significantly raises redox. It polishes water to unparalleled clarity. Purigen® darkens progressively as it exhausts, and is easily renewed by treating with bleach. Purigen® is designed for both marine and freshwater use.

@Zoom stained water is great for your fish and I do notice a difference especialy with my neons however when it starts affecting plant growth something must be done. As for c well I have an enitre basket filled with it in my canister and the water is still yellow brown. An interesting fact I did note with the relaxing effect of humic acids from pfp when it leeched was that my fish went almost into a coma for a few days. I can only assume they were effectively "stoned" from the acids

My previous post may have been a bit harsh, but all I was getting as is that we need to find a balance between the fish's health and "happiness" and what we prefer to see. The commercial trade dictates that unless your tank is crystal clear, you are not being successful... however science is proving that wrong too. Science says that a bit of algae is good, humic acid is good etc. It all comes down to balance. I also think that a lot of the staining is accentuated if you have the wrong lighting as well. In my Nano tank at one stage I was adding black water extract... and with the nice lighting I had in there, it actually gave a nice feel to the whole tank. However now I am obviously growing more light demanding plants, so the darker water was not helping.

I agree 100% @FishRMan. You may find your PFP is not capped enough? I have PFP in my tank and haven't experiences any leeching at all.
