There is a guy on Gumtree in Durban that sells them...decent price too...you just have to pay the courier cost though on top of it...I got a couple from him without any issues and they arrived in good health.

my turn to ask the dreaded question.... I thought that these were not to be sold. I know all our LFS flat out refuse to sell shrimp at all...

@Mark K, that was my understanding and as with all things I stand to be corrected. I have read a lot in this forum regarding shrimp and the like and there seems to be a sizeable amount of red tape floating about..

New to the fresh water side of things so was unaware...is it due to the fact they may get into our local habitat and take over?

I know a lfs who always has stock of ghost shrimp and red cherry shrimp. Doesn't seem like the whole shrimp is illegal thing is enforced across the board.

@Mark K, that is my understanding. Careless release into local waterways leads to destruction of habitat and general invasion... ghost shrimp occur here naturally but the cherry shrimp are not endemic as far as I know.

Hey guys. i stand to be corrected as well. but a read an article a while back. cant exactly recall where i read it but basically the article stated that not all shrimp are illegal. just certain species. and red cherry shrimp is one among just a handful of species that were allowed. if im not mistaken it was only about 3 - 5 species that were not on the black list

I've also read somewhere after finding out which one is legal and which once illegal the red cherry shrimps had a thumbs up.
Its the blue water crayfish that I know is illegal as they destroy everything.

I would also like it, the info online is ambiguous and there are many varying views on the forum. I have searched the forum archives and the info is quite old. If one of the shrimp experts here (and there are a couple) could maybe put together a definitive list relevant to 2015 I think it would be really beneficial..

    cheers,

    Greg

    An update.

i spoke to the owner at the lfs today about shrimps legal or not.

he said he asked law enforcement if it's legal to sell in his shop since he doesn't want to get in trouble. The officer recalled if you import them they are illegal and you will be fined R100 000. But if you can proof it's local trade you safe. They need to proof that you importing them before you will be fined. He takes copies of the guys ID's that brings them in to trade or sell. If you have them it's legal but to import you in for trouble.
    Hope it helps.

@Tetra, thanks bud. Seems the LFS round here just want to say "no, they're illegal" Seems odd though as the environmental threat exists whether they are bred and traded here imported.
    Logic.....
