Red Shoulder Severum Behaviour?

Thanks @Reedfish. They're in a community tank, so I don't rate the chances of fry surviving as probable. The parents are undoubtably the bosses of the tank, but those tetras a quick and sneaky. I'm very keen to breed these fish in the future, so will make a plan with allocating a breeding tank.

Cesar's reds spawned last week but... eggs vanished....

 

Yeah, mine too. Will definitely watch out for their spawning colour again and be prepared next time.

 

@Reedfish.... yes... you are right.... learning that very fast..

Our electric blue acars spawned about 2 weeks ago and 2 days later ate their eggs
They spawnd again on Saturday, this time the eggs were still there this morning so.. we will see..


But sometimes, even on their own they eat the eggs and that's depressing!!

 

Having observed the red shoulder Severums for several months now, I know have the reason for the head shaking that worried me originally. I've seen the same behaviour every time I introduce a new type, colour or texture of food. Unless it's something they instinctively recognize as good stuff...like worms, they proceed with the head shaking spiel.

I guess they have their likes and dislikes too!

 

The Red Shoulder Severum pair have grown very quickly. The female is still the smaller of the two, but completely in charge... in fact, she's usually pecking at the poor male and just generally being a nag...

Hope you manage to breed them

My red and green/turquoise paired up and laid eggs which they looked after for 3 days then.. ate the eggs
But again in the big tank...

 

I'm going to try to scrape up the eggs when they spawn again. I recently had good success doing this with Cory eggs. I don't know how prone Severum eggs are to fungus though?

 

I did that with my albino red Oscars but I wasn't successful.. the eggs grew fungus.. Maybe I didn't do it right.. It was my fist time...

I haven't tried with the Severums.. might give it a go next time..

The geos have been a pleasure! They dont eat for 3 or 4 days.... You worry yourself sick that your fish is sick and 4 days down the line she opens her mouth and presents you with all the babies!!!!

 

Eish.. I know what you mean. My Malawi peacocks hold their fry for so long that they actually get thin.
