None, only petshop fish. I'm keeping a close ear to the ground. If I find any good fish I'll post immediately.

@Adhil Excellent! Glad you found some, now send some luck my way. I think this is a good thread and we must keep it going. It will help sell fish much quicker and give the breeders incentive to actually breed as they can get their juvies out quick as they will make money quicker, those babies are a pricey bunch to feed. Hopefully next season I can put my name on that list, fingers crossed.

I don't see any place for discus in petshops to be honest, until the shops actually start making an effort with them my opinion won't change. Discus needs their TLC and a person that will do the effort and a bit extra.

So true @BoelderBeestie, I hate what I see in the lfs and look for decent fish from breeders. I know of RICHARD in howick who has nice pigeons and melons, he is trying to breed his red turquoise. The new breeder I made contact with is from Jhb and he breeds rubie reds, red turquoise, pigeons, blue diamonds. He will be home this weekend and send me pics of what he has and I will post it here with his details so you guys can also make contact with him.

Thanks @Adhil, we need to stick together on this one to get the hobby a good foothold in this country in the private sector. If you look at the top guys in the world they all had a local interest and build there breeding quality from there. Now the are rolling out the best quality fish you will ever see and they are exporting large amounts. If done right we can become world class and keep the asian market at bay. I really hate what I see from Asia sometimes, colorful yes but not true discus anymore, they should be round like the name states after all. They should rename some of them to drarf big eyed football fish. The scientific name can be Parvus Ipsum of the genus Grandis Oculus hahaha.

And when they breed we can say the fry came from a local breeder. He sells them to us, we breed them and the line continues in our own backyard. No more imports required for a while. That should be our goal and with the knowledge we gain and amount of fish we can produce if all goes well we can really kick start the hobby in SA. Places like Germany have a big discus following, they have get togethers to discuss techniques, clubs and everything.

Those turqs in your pic are so healthy and well grown out I can even tell the sex from here with a relative degree of success be it only 50% haha. Female on the left, male with the bulbous head to the right. I saw with my fish when they got jiggy that the females have finer features on the face and build to the males and the bulbous head is a dead giveaway. But one can only be 100% certain when you see them spawn.

My fish laid eggs yesterday and kept them over night. Still going strong. Fingers crossed they go all the way this time.
