    Hi all,

    Went down to the local lfs today and bought 1 Red Zebra and 1 Albino Zebra.....since getting home and introducing them to the tank, I've noticed that the "Red Zebra" just does'nt seem like one in comparison to the other, or pics I see online.
    Did some searching on the net and found what it appeared to look like, which was a female Johanii.....it even has a black line along the tip of its dorsal fin.
    Anyone out there who can maybe help me confirm its ID?

    This is my fish :

    This is a pic of a female Johanni (Bottom) from the web :

    Based on what I have seen and googled. I think it is actually a red zebra.
    @Mugsy , I am no cichlid expert but this is my opinion:
    The female johanni looks two yellow to be your fish. The anal fin has a smudge of different colour which the johanni doesnt have. As you can see the johanni is one uniform colour all the way through and your fish has obvious colour differences. IMO , I could be COMPLETELY wrong this comment was based on observation only.

    @FishLover - Thanks for your input, its appreciated.
    I do have to say though, that in terms of body shape this fish still doesnt strike me as a red zebra or similar to the others I've kept....I dont know, maybe I'm just being pedantic and seeing something that isn't there.
    Thanks again

    @Mugsy,
    To be honest, I am not convinced it is either.

    Mbuna cross and hybridise very easily.
    And there is a lot of this sort of rubbish out there.
    Even in the UK, loads of lfs sell this type of thing.
    If you are serious about what you keep, it is worth taking the extra time to find some quality fish from a reliable source.

    @Reedfish - Thanks for your input.

    I have already contacted one of the sponsors here to see what they can come up with for me, as I definitely want what I'm paying for.
    When I selected the fish from my local lfs (who are usually pretty good), I did point out the fish I wanted but then went off to grab some bio balls and ceramic rings while they fished it out.
    Its possible they could've grabbed the wrong fish and hence I only noticed once I got home and introduced it to the tank....
    Either way, I'm going there tomorrow, and if I spot my "original" choice, may take this little guy back and swop him/her out for the real deal.

    @Mugsy,

    I hope this lfs can sort you out. But it sounds like he is selling a whole lot of hybrids.

    One thing with Malawis is do a lot of research on what you plan on stocking.

    Definately not red zebra, Metriaclima estherae. Would suggest possibly johanni or parallelus. If you look front on, you will see that the mouth shape does not resemble that of a zebra, suitable for grazing the aufwuchs.
