ok so iv started my testing with a sera test kit so dont hold it against me.
tested my tap water last night and got a reading 8.
    gh of 5
    kh of 6
added seachem discus buffer as per instructions into 40l container overnight with airstone for filtration and this morning got a ph reading of 6.5
will re-test ph and test gh when i get home tonight.

Hi @oscar freak. A TDS meter is just convenient and quick, but do not tell you as much as your kH and gH tests. That I recently learned here on the forum, from Prof. Your gH and kH readings seem odd. To my knowledge, gH should be higher than kH, as gH take more salts into consideration in its measurement. kH measure carbonates and bicarbonates, gH measure magnesium and calcium. My understanding is that an increase in kH will also increase gH. I might be wrong and would like to hear what others say about it. The phosphate in Discuss Buffer however does not increase the gH, as we have learned in this thread I think. A TDS meter however will report the phosphates, making your gH looking higher than what it is. So you can chill about the TDS meter, especially if you use Discus Buffer.

Not holding anything against you bud, just bouncing my own thoughts off you for others to jump in and correct me if I am wrong. That way I learn.:tomato:

I so wish someone can come up with a way that we can project tone of voice in our posts. The smiley's and so on nearly does it, but not quite yet.
