    Greetings!

My Purigen is pretty dark brown so I think its time to recharge.

I just want to know from fellow aquarists, do I follow the seachem directions of soaking in 1;1 bleach water solution for 24 hrs, rinse and soak for a further 8 hours in dechlorinated water? Or are there other ways people have found to be better?

    Thanks in advance
    Heinrich

ok here is what I did 4 days back, I have 750 ml Purigen in "the bag" so its quite alot.

Step 1: I soak in bleach 1:3 (see side note) for 24 hours, keep on stirring and mushing and mixing the bag when I get the chance. Because I have so much purigen; 1 go ins't enough for me, its still brown, so it usually takes me a second time (24 hours) also 1:3. So keep repeating until its clean.

Step 2: I just rinse it thoroughly with water and soak for 1-2 hours in normal water. Key word is thoroughly!

Step 3: For my 750ml I add 3 caps of Prime and let it soak 24 hours, making sure to stir whenever I get the chance, after that I do a full water change and add 3 caps again for 12 hours +-.

Doing it this way may be overkill but you do not want to get any bleach in your water, so rather take the extra time and be sure. If after your routine the purigen still has a soapy feel rinse and repeat (literally).

Notes: Purigen is only regenerate-able 8 times or something (what I have read) seems the bleach takes its toll on the purigen. So thats why I use a 1:3 or even 1:5,6,7 is ok, this is ofcourse only speculation on my part and is yet to be proven.

Notes: NEVER let the purigen dry out completely, you'll damage it.

    HTH
    Regards

    Thanks @Krefie!
So you use 1 part bleach and 3 parts water? Sounds like a lot of Prime there, but rather safe than very sorry!

    @HeinrichLourens

yeah that's correct and my reasoning as-well ^_^, I've read of a few horrible disasters!

Get this feeling in my @nus that something would go wrong every time I place the purigen back into my tank, but the routine has worked thus far.

Edit: You actually dont have to use Prime, I've used neutral regulator as well, anything that removes chlorine, as it is the active ingredient in bleach.

Yeah it might work out cheaper to buy some cheap dechlorinator and use enough as Prime is pretty pricey...

Are the horror stories mainly of people not rinsing the stuff properly and then introducing bleach to their tank?

Yeah, not taking the time to let it soak properly and stirring every now and then. Just google "purigen disaster" haha, you'll find more than enough laughs (dark humor).

I would still use prime, but if you can find a cheap de-chlorinater then go for it on the first soak, then use prime. Something just tells me to use prime...just a gut feeling...

Yup, that "gut feeling" is always there to trust in my opinion!

I've just put my 100ml bag in the bleach solution, so I'll see what it looks like tomorrow this time, then 2 hour rinse, then 12 hour soak in prime water, test by sniff, then more prime water if needed.

Thanks a million for the info bud!

I regenerated my 2 x 100ml bags a couple of months ago and it took a long time to get rid of the bleach smell just told my gut to try and put it in the tank and WOW no issues.

I've followed the Seachem guide to the fullest. Why deviate from something they have spend lots of time and money on to work?

Third time I'm recharging as we speak, and each time it has worked perfectly.

I'm amazed at how quickly it starts to turn white! So the bleach smell stays in it for a quite a while?

Lots of people have followed the instructions to the fullest, yet sometimes some bleach still remains.

Why not take extra care? Point-of-view I suppose, do what you like.
