While I'd love them, all fish in the genus Malapterurus are NEMBA listed here... except M. shirensis, which I don't believe is traded often. A small loophole is that the other genus in the family, Paradoxoglanis, is not listed, but again I don't know if those ever pop up in the trade. It's an odd fish to want, because apparently they don't do much all day and end up looking like speckled sausages but there's something about them that says they'd be fun to keep.
Must say today was the first time I was captivated by an African cichlid tank at a lfs (@RBM AQUATICS ) and I haven’t had the opportunity to view members tanks in person. Fun fish, can see why people like them!
I think they get quite big, but are relatively inactive. Seems a bit of a waste of a tank to me I was offered an Electric Eel a few years ago. Was sooooooo tempted. But my kids were a lot younger, and used to touch the glass of the tank now and then. Was told that the current can't pass from the water to the glass, but wasn't prepared to take any chances. Also, my tank may have been a bit small long term.
Not sure, thought it might be. The same stone used in another tank too, with kribbs and jewel cichlids
They just get super aggressive and territorial when raising fry, right? I’ve seen underwater footage in the wild where a krib mom keeps a 6 foot radius around her fry clear, even chasing much bigger fish away pretty aggressively. Not sure it’s a good match with apistos and corys? Wonder how they would do in a tiger barb tank? That could work in a big enough tank? how are your kribs behaving?
Yeah they are agro very agro when they have fry. I sold mine up for that reason. They took up 90% of my 4ft for themselves. Keep only males if you want it to work with other fish. That would look awesome. Tiger barbs are another one of my favourites. Sold most of mine have 1 male that I bread left. He manged to hide for months in my tank without me knowing so he's staying. Less aggressive on his own tends to leave the other fish alone most of the time.
I'm not sure on that. I have just one male and he seems to be doing well but I'm not sure if they need more
