I doubt very much you would get wc here but i do know Uarus are just as expensive here and not easy to come buy.
You find them now and then at the bigger LFS's and a little baby is minimum about 250.00
Slightly bigger ones are around R300.00.

Could be that nobody is breeding them large scale, the one type of uaru is rather hardy and they look after their fry like discus do

... how? Unless they're ready to spawn, it's pretty damn hard to tell without very invasive techniques.

Yes, but egg fullness and visible genital papillae are only apparent close to spawning time. The fish need to be both sexually mature and conditioned to spawn.

I could sex both of my males at a small size. It's rather apparent through the angle at which the papillae lie

Admittedly, I don't know much about African Notopterids; I spend a lot more time reading about the Asian species. In those species though, sexual diffeentiation using papillae was only possible once the fish reached a few years of age. I know in my clown knifefish, even at 40 to 45cm, the papilla was just visible if you got the angle just right, and even then you wouldn't be able to confidently determine shape.

Maybe it's different in the African species, but I can't imagine so much so. Even in the article, the fish are of a moderate size (considering their maximum size), and the fish are conditioned with both hormones and breeding triggers (extensive live foods being used).

Just consider that sexing might not be accurate. The papillae will be very similar at this size, I suspect. All I'm saying is you might have a better time getting the sex ratios you want by buying a good sized group of fish, and growing them up.
