My understanding right now is this:
    1. There is scientific evidence that Gluteraldehyde is toxic
    2. There is no scientific evidence from Seachem that Excel is safe for aquatic organisms, despite them stating its safety in plain terms repeatedly
    3. We know Excel works
    4. We have never seen it kill any fish if used as per instructions
    5. It is a great tool to fight certain algae types

If somebody would like to add something to this list, please do so.

I agree with Henk on that one having mostly outgrown my asthma long ago the smell of excel does make my chest tight however it was a simple matter of placing the container somewhere far.

Its smells like LPG to me! Which I guess on even given day would not be the best thing to add to an aquarium. I have no chest tightening personally but after what ive learnt from everyone I dont particularly make an effort smell it anymore!

@shihr, cause I had never used it before, was very new to the hobby and was intrigued by this liquid carbon stuff till I learnt about its possible toxicity.

I didnt sniff the stuff - i left it in a bowl while soaking a pipe in it to see if it will kill the BBA on the pipe.

Which probably worked, but a much cheaper solution is household bleach if you are going to be taking equipment out to soak!

i am eagerly awaiting a response from the person claiming to be a seachem representative, as i use excel in my tanks as well.

i have 2 bottles of the stuff, one unopened and i need to know if i retain and continue to use it it or do i dispose of it, and if i need to dispose of it, how do i safely do that?

for me this is a real concern as i have a 2 month old baby daughter in the house.

as professor dirk said, we do need an explanation that is more scientifically accurate and perhaps also some way of verifying that the seachem representative is in fact a seachem representative.

I have been in discussions with Seachem. Firstly this is a legit member who works for Seachem, and is not a false person making claims and allegations. @Seachem is currently discussing with his seniors on how to respond with correct facts to this thread. To all our Sponsors. I believe we can show a little bit of South African Hospitality in allowing them the freedom to defend their product. After all, many of you do sell this product. Thereafter should Seachem wish to promote any further, we have requested that they become a sponsor of the forum.

Henk... this has nothing to do with sales, marketing or sponsoring. TASA have made some very valid claims against the product, and it is only fair that they have the opportunity to defend their product. This is NOT a commercial post, and all moderators are in FULL agreement.

    To all our other members...

Seachem has retracted their previous post entirely. They have been given 24hours to issue a new statement, which I believe their chemists are busy working on as I type this. If there is no statement forthcoming, I will re-instate previous post.

TASA should pay them to post here, they will actually share knowledge about their products and not just post what is already printed on the bottle.....

@mydummyname just get rid of it, then you don't have to worry about all the scientific proof, simple really....

These kind of scare tactics is annoying...
