Thanks but I am sorted I found someone who can build me a new 200Liter tank with stand sliding class top, lid and stand for around R1600. Cutting the shop price by almost R400!

yip,i had 2 full grown Oscars about a week ago,I had to clean the tank occasionally because the ammonia levels were too high (too small filter and it didn't have benificial bacteria).I had to give them away eventually.

Anyway,goodluck with your fish transfer and i hope everything works out okay.

 

larch – seeing that you are going to have the tank built, why not add a sump as a filter. Or at least have the tank base drilled so that you can add a sump at a later stage if you want to. The hole in the base can be temporarily covered with a piece of glass. I have never kept Oscars before, but from what I have read on the forum, I understand that they are quite messy. Adding a sump would add to the volume of water, making it easier to maintain the quality of the water, and give you space to put the heater and even the thermometer.

Problem is I am limited by budget and space constraints, and yes Oscar's are extremely messy fish but my current setup seems to be doing fine in keeping up with the growing Oscar. Obviously I am going to bump up the filtration to a 1000liters a hour once I get the 250liter tank. Currently I am doing 700liters a hour in my 100liter, and since I am planning on keeping a single fish water quality wont become such a big issue.

I will see maybe I will get a 2nd one, but Oscar's are more then happy when they have a whole tank to themselves. Even in their natural habitat they spend most of it alone.

Seems the Taxman has been really kind to me with my Tax rebate so I am getting a R1200 back from them, now I can lookout for a better internal filter system any suggestions?

 

From the picture that you have posted, you can see that the tank has a built-in filter on the left side. It consists of three or four chambers. The idea is that you put the filter media in the first chambers, and a return pump in the last chamber. If there is enough space you can put the heater in the last chamber as well. The advantage of the built-in filter is the fact that you can fit loads more filter media into them, and you select what you want to use. The disadvantage is that they take up tank space. But it will be better that a normal internal filter.

 

Yip. What I would do is turn your 100lit tank into a sump, buy a 1200lph pump, some ceramics and you have what you need, and you'd only have spent +- R500 to do that. With that you have a great filter, and added an extra 50 odd liters to the setup.

 

You'd obviously then, as kuhliloach pointed out, need not to have that built in filter system.

 

Oh sorry should have mentioned that I asked him to build one without that compartment, since it is going to be a Oscar tank I am going to need all the space I can get.

Man I would love to do something like that but not a lot of space to work with unfortunately, due to my home being my office and the office bring a small flat :wondering:

 

Youd need no more space than this tank will occupy anyhow. You just tell whoever builts the stand what your intensions are, and the 100l can then slot in neatly under the 4ft on the same stand. As long as you just build it to accomodate it like that. It really is the best way forward. You can just buy 2 pieces of glass to glue to the 100l and in a matter of hours you'd be 100%!

 

Thanks for the advice I am planning on breaking a wall and building a wall mounted cabinet into it then I would most definitely look into it any good reading material for building a sump and how to go about it?

Thanks for the help guys, went to go get the stuff I will be needing for the new tank actually found a place that sold Eheim 300W heaters so all is good. Now just waiting for the call to go get the tank.

I am looking to transfer all of the water from the 100liter tank over to the new one. And due to a stroke of luck I got about 100liters of water standing in my garage for about a month now due to water interruptions that I will also use. I was thinking of getting a cheapish 30 liter tank to put my baby Oscar in while I do the transfer he will be staying there for a day max.

 

I hope the tea, sugar, salt and pepper weren't bought from the same LPS. That's be a bit dodge.

 

Ahaha why not? Go pickup a loaf of bread for the wife while getting some fish perfect excuse to go to the LPS.
