So as a start I am thinking of starting a small facility to sell South American cichlids and exotics / oddballs. The reason being that there is so many gaps in the market in this regard (probably because the market isn't that big) but a small facility will scratch the itch of a select few could be a profitable but also a rewarding endeavor. I feel this is a reasonable but good approach , but will look to expand to African cichlids down the line through partnering with another hobbyist or 2 (Just because African cichlids seem to be some of the most popular fish in SA). As for exotics , fish like rare bichirs/catfish , flagtails etc (Basically things to sell to those with cichlid tanks, perhaps some community fish if the demand is there) . Any thoughts and criticism welcome. Those who are central and south American fans will understand the niche isn't quite supported at least in Cape Town.

Sounds like a good plan. Watching along to see how it goes

I like your idea. But you could struggle with a speciality fish store.
It may be an idea to sell the common “bread and butter” fish too, just to increase your turnover

Well its true that bread and butter fish could get customers through the door , they don't make sense for a small store. Just because the margin on small common fish is so small , also requires much bigger minimum orders , also puts me in direct competition with big stores that can outcompete me on price
