Did some reading up and @SalmonAfrica is absolutely right
They are freshwater even though many of the locations where they are found the river basins could be slightly brackish at times it appears the salinity is not enough to make them brackish and they are full freshwater
They are the largest freshwater species known, often referred to as the giant short tail river stingray
It can reach a disc of 2m disc and 300kg weight
Size only surpassed by Arapaima and Piraiba catfish

The entry in "Rays of the World" suggests they are fresh water.
Disc size 150cm weight up to 220kg

As far as I know, no. They're big, but the Asian species are actually borderline mythically sized. Well, used to be most likely. Big fish in that part of the world are overfished and see a marked decrease in average size over time.

I'm not familiar with this particular species in captivity, although I did come across a video of one in a tank. However...

Cairns Aquarium (Australia) has the freshwater whipray on exhibit. A very close relative of that legendary giant freshwater stingray from SE Asia. Can imagine that the captive care for the two might be quite similar... besides the required tank size, I'd guess. They have this one (above) housed in 300 000 litres alongside a sawfish, completely freshwater. Australia has it aquarium game on point!

300 000 liters that's massive must be 100 meters plus. Guess I can't fit that in my house . Awesome pic too
