Striped Angelfish Pics

One had to see them Altums in person! (sound like them Stones!)
Not even a good picture do them justice.
They were real gems...

 

Right Gert,

You saw them in my aquaria, but then I had the priviledge of visiting Simon Forkel in Coburg in Germany in June this year. He keeps a number of altums from different tributaries of the Rio Orinoco where they occur in nature and he has stunning fishes and quite a lot of offspring. The first pics are fishes from the Rio Atabapo tributary, they were 35 cm tall and absolutely breathtaking. Then he had a pair consisting of a male that was tankbred by Horst Linke, and older generation breeder of altums from Germany, and the female was a Atabapo wildcaught fish. These fishes were cleaning a breeding cone when I got there and when I left 2 hours later they had laid a cone full of eggs as you can see. Simon keeps his fishes in tanks that are 70 cm deep, 60 cm wide and 1.5 m long so you need lots of space and a lot of attention to water conditions (soft and very acid).

These fish were absolutely outstanding and in terms of striped angelfishes these are absolutely the top of the range, and in my opinion these fishes just about top anything else, including the thousands of discus that I have seen by now.

I hope that I can get some altums again soon and we will have to see if I can get them to breed.

Prof, do they use 2 cones in order to give them height? seeing that the fish are so tall.

O.K - since we talking some SERIOUS Angels here.... Have known for a while that someone(lives in Cape Town btw...) who used to be active here on TASA(Think Henk or Gert knows him...something like Spider by name) had a big tank full of P.dumerellii/leopoldii..... Got some placement in an international Aquascaping competition...)

Has anybody in RSA kept,raised/bred any other Pterophylum species other than P.scalare....? I've gone to F13(not from wildcaught - just a pair I bought WAY back...) with P.scalare to fix a high fin strain in them when I gave up the program(SO wish I had a digital camera back then....Grrrr) - Funny thing is - after like 6 years,whenever I go back to CT,I still see traces of that marbled/striped strain whenever I go back to CT and "trawl" the LFS's...lol

My Peruvian crossed with domestic angels are coming along very nicely, and I wanted to post a few more pics. The first pic is of the oldest babies which are now 1 month and 5 days from freeswimming. I have never had angels grow as well and as quickly. They are with few exceptions very even in their growth rate which is actually a sign that they are not inbred. I show two more pics of the first pair with the older young and the second pair with their smaller young. Both pairs want to attack me every time when I appear in front of the tanks, they are just stunning parents.

Hi Prof, some really stunning offspring there.The other angel pics are equally impressive.2 of my striped angel fish took a very interesting turn.The silver ones are turning blue. Will post pics when I am back home again.

Your angels are absolutely amazing. I have always been a fan of more wild striped types rather than any fancier hybrids, though admittedly that is how I usually feel about any fish. I must say I can agree that I do find them more attractive than discus. I'm glad I came across this thread as we are looking into perhaps getting a pair of Angels for our 250L, as we haven't actually managed to come to a concrete decision on where to go with this tank.

I have been under extreme work pressure in the last couple of weeks which is why you have not heard very much from me and why I have not posted more pics.

My angel babies from the first pair are now about 6-8 cm tall and are ready to go. I have selected 30 for my own breeding purposes, Andrew (PhishMan) collected 50 from me yesterday evening and I now have a further 80 that I can sell off. After that I will sell the 300 plus young from the next batch but they are still a little too small.

I have to come to Johannesburg to attend a meeting that will be held at the Garden Court Hotel at the OR Tambo Airport on 8 November. I have to fly there on 7 November (coming Monday) and will arrive there in the early evening. If there are persons interested in getting some of these angels, I could bring some along, price R15 per fish. They are all stunning and in excellent condition.
