Hey guys, just registered on this site and a newbie "aquarist". Started a 20g Betta tank two weekends ago and found the same white "snot" on my driftwood. i thought it was because I didnt boil the wood since its too big for a pot, but I did scrub using boiling water. I must say I was freaking out this morning after my find but thanks to the divine powers that lead me here and you guys for all the info I know what i gotta do.

one question though, i was kinda excited that my betta had become extremely lively after moving him from the pet shop but even more so since the weekend. I started thinking maybe he is stressed. I have ordered some plants that are on their way which will eventually provide cover but can anyone tell me if its a problem that Valentino is swimming up and down constantly?

The fungus that causes this is saprophytic - meaning it lives off dead wood, particularly the cellulose of the woods cell walls... once it uses this up from the surface cells, the fungus dies back and dissapears... QED...

I have some of this wood in my paludarium, some of it above and some below the water... had the same happen underwater... now almost a year later,I am getting bracket fungi starting to grow on the emersed parts WAY COOL - Hope it turns out like the ones you get in the Tzitzikama forest...

@Rainer... No worries bout your Betta mate... its just happier being in a new tank and exploring its environment... often male bettas are kept in tiny, unfiltered jars...no heat or filter - I'dd mope in a corner too if I was them... just keep up with the waterchanges and dont feed to much...

Thank @azurekoi really helps a lot. I hope he is alright, just seems weird that he does this all the time as if he's not even sleeping. I leave pretty early and and get home after 8 and he's always just darting up and down. Maybe I should give him a snack of bloodworm coz i gave him one last week last. Will post pics of my tank soon once i figure out how to take proper photos

Lucky you! Mine doesnt like to be touched, but they love to bite me! Ive gotten both to jump for they bloodworms when I hold it onmy finger just above the water. Last night my one boy decided its more fun to bite me! And both my boys play with the gravel vac when I clean their tanks. Also both have habits of attacking the eye dropper I use to give them their mysis and daphnia with. I love these guys tho, so much personality :D

haha yea, Ive learnt to be VERY careful, my one boy actually loves going up the vacuum :D He tries it every time I clean the tank. Fortunately since I keep a close eye on him, hes only managed it two times and didnt get very far :p
