These things happen. Thank goodness for a generator though, otherwise we'd have a much bigger problem. I'm just glad i don't have any fish currently, otherwise i'd have to leave the gennie running all night

    Almost the weekend
Although it's spring, the forecast is for quite low temps :(
So will be indoors most of the time I guess.

From Monday, non-essential shops are allowed to open. And we are gaining a few other freedoms.
What was once taken for granted is now a luxury

Arrived home about an hour ago to the devastating sight and news of the fire at UCT and surrounds. We are safe but can see the fire on the mountain from our porch. Checked in with friends who live in the line of fire, things are quite hectic there still and we might hear the doorbell tonight...

I have read that it started from an unattended vagrant fire

That’s what the fire fighters suspect yes. Our friends were on the mountain earlier today and said to each other that it was the ideal conditions for a runaway fire. 36C, berg wind, dry...

The hubby is dropping off supplies for the fire fighters. Apparently lots of UCT students evacuated to Rondebosch commons and goodness knows how they’re going to sleep tonight...

Yeah most of UCT has been evacuated, several faculty buildings have burnt, even the library. Upper campus is facing extreme damage.
Bolus herbarium was caught in the blaze, which to an aspiring botanist, is heart breaking. 170 years of botanical history in the oldest & largest herbarium in South Africa. We will have to hope for the best for the university.

Our side of the mountain seems calm now but the Vredehoek side is under extreme threat today. Apparently the helicopters will not be active today due to extreme wind on that side.

When I lived in Cape Town, I was a little further down the mountain in Oranjezicht.

So sad to hear of all the devastation :(

Didn't know you lived in South Africa. How long you lived there?

@A new day I'm so happy to hear that you're in the clear. My prayers are with you that you remain safe. It's so shocking to see all that's been damaged.
